Featured Art Exhibit Michael Fauerbach: A Retrospective MICHAEL FAUERBACH: A RETROSPECTIVE "From Brooklyn to Barns" Opening Reception Saturday, Jan. 14, 2 to 4 p.m. Roxbury Arts Center 5025 Vega Mountain Road, Roxbury The Roxbury Arts Group's exhibition "From Brooklyn to Barns" is a retrospective of the late Catskills area artist Michael Fauerbach. The exhibit features the paintings, watercolors, drawings and three- dimensional constructions. Although his work over the last 40 years exhibits different styles, dimensions and subject matter, it follows a consistent theme _ the history and future of the people and buildings that were the subjects of his work. His soulful attention to his subject matter is revealed by close and careful observation. The results are the push and pull of technique and dimensionality, moving from a flat canvas to an increasingly textural surface, then bursting into three dimensional space and back again. Fauerbach's paintings and three-dimensional works are seen in the Walt Meade Gallery and Hilt Kelly Hall in Roxbury. Photos by Cassandra Miller Born in the Bronx, Fauerbach's first studio was on Houston Street in the Bowery. He also worked and lived in Brooklyn, Tribeca and Jersey City. He was a founding member of the Rhino Horn Group, an artist movement in the 1970s that was counterpoint to the more avant-garde movements of that time. He remained throughout his career an artist in the realistic-humanistic tradition. Fauerbach and his wife of more than 40 years, Ellen, bought prop- erty in the Catskills in 1986. This is when Mike started his "portraits" of barns. The Fauerbachs settled permanently in the Catskills in 2003. The exhibition will be on view at the Roxbury Arts Group's Walt Meade Gallery and Hilt Kelly Hall from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday, Jan. 14, through March 16, or by appointment.
