Low-sodium diets. There are many actions that we can take to stay safe and healthy. Some of them, like cut- ting back on desserts require a little sacrifi ce. Others, like quitting smoking, can require a huge amount of effort. But there's one ac- tion we can take to protect our health that requires very little effort or sacrifi ce – testing your home for radon. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that is invisible, odorless, and tasteless. Radon is released harmlessly from the ground into outdoor air, but it can accumulate and reach harmful levels when trapped inside homes. Long-term exposure is a serious health risk. Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. after smoking and the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. Radon levels vary from place to place and house to house, so ev- ery home should be tested. Testing is as easy as opening a package, placing the detector in a designated area, and after a set number of days, sending the detector to the lab for analysis. Winter is a great time to test a home for radon because "closed house" conditions are needed for an accurate test. January is National Radon Action Month and the NC Radon Pro- gram is encouraging homeowners to conduct a radon test by offer- ing free test kits. These kits will be available at Rutherford County Cooperative Extension Monday through Friday, 8:30am–5:00pm from January 3 until January 31. Kits will be distributed on a fi rst- come-fi rst-served basis and are limited to one per household. Drop by Cooperative Extension at 193 Callahan Koon Road to pick up your free radon test kit.
