Broadway St., Forest City Not Just Oil, Pennzoil Seven Local Sports Stories We Shouldn't Forget We just welcomed in 2012, so here are a few things to look back on from 2011 involving Rutherford County high school athletics. 7)Thomas Jefferson's boys soccer team goes four rounds in the playoffs before being defeated in the elite eight. In school history, the Gryphons had never made it that far in postseason play in any sport until this year. 6) East Rutherford at R-S Central football rivalry. East held a 22-7 lead, but rival R-S Central came back to tie at 22-all in the fourth. Following that, East struck for two quick scores to win 36-22. 5) R-S Central's girls made it to the third round of the basketball playoffs for the second year in a row, but couldn't get past a stubborn opponent in Hickory this time. They still have a great chance to do some damage again this year with an 11-1 record so far. 4) Chase resurges in football! The Trojans went 9-4 on the year with second year head coach Dan- iel Bailey at the helm. They held opponents to 18 points or less in half of this season's contests. The methodical option offense made other teams pay every week and gave them their best record in over a decade. 3) East narrowly misses another baseball title! The Cavs went for title number six in nine years, but East's Taylor Peyton was thrown out at the plate in a decisive game three that would have tied things at 8-8 against eventual 2A champs, Randleman. 2) Chase's Carlos Watkins picks Clemson as his college of choice. Florida was hot on the trail of defensive end, but the Trojan decided on Clemson to continue his football career. 1) East Rutherford captures fi rst basketball state title! Smoky Mountain, Salisbury, Mountain Heritage and Northwood couldn't derail East Ru- therford from winning it's fi rst 2A basketball title in 2011. A Zack Price three-ball in Sylva and Ra- heem Hampton's behind the back pass to Devince Boykins for the slam in championship game pro- vided the two biggest plays in their run to state. As for local hoops, here is an update on how the holiday tourney's went this past week. East Rutherford's boys had no problem in taking the East Rutherford Christmas Classic at home in a rout of R-S Central during the fi nals. Central won its opening round game. A usual event in Rutherford County no longer continued this season. The Lady Hilltopper Clas- sic is held for three days after Christmas, but or- ganizer, Darius Fuller decided to not have one this year. They will likely continue it in the future. The decision worked out great this past week as the R-S Central girls captured the four-team Christmas Title in Rock Hill. Tia Bristol's double- double in game one (10 points, 12 boards) extend- ed into the championship game as she scored 15, while teammate Shannon Hines posted a double- double (23 points, 11 rebounds) in the fi nals. East Rutherford's girls completed the same mis- sion during a three-game tourney in Landrum this past week, winning by an average of 18.3 points per game. They beat Blue Ridge, SC by 10 in the fi nals. Chase boys and girls placed seventh in the Da- vid Wright Classic in Cherryville. Thomas Jefferson boys took home fi fth place, while Thomas Jefferson girls placed sixth in the David Wright Classic. The Gryphons boys took down Chase, 55-41 during the action this week, but the Chase girls fi nally picked up win number one on the season. Kendra Holcombe and Kaitlyn Smart both scored in double digits, while the unsung heroics of Eishla Cruz seven points and six rebound effort pushed them to a 51-38 victory over Huss.
