Why don't parents control their children like they should? How many times have we heard these questions, or how many times have we, ourselves, asked these questions? ere are so many of us who like to think of "the good 'ole' days" when children didn't dare question the authority or talk back to an adult. Many of us adults tend to stereotype today's youth as much more "challenging" than we were. (e truth being told, adults probably said the same about us when we were young.) To our way of thinking, adults are always right and children are supposed to listen and learn. In a perfect world that probably should be the case because it is our responsibility as adults to prepare our children for adult- hood. Unfortunately, our world is far from perfect and many "all-knowing" adults do dumb and immature things that hinder rather than help proper child development. Far too many adults are ill-prepared to handle children and irresponsibility displayed by adults often is justified cause for children to question them. Do we dare ask a child's opinion? If we're not willing to listen to a different point of view, we shouldn't ask. Children usually are not reluctant to tell us what they think, unless we ask them what they think they can do to improve themselves. But, most of us are like that; we're usually good about telling others what they need to do but are unwilling to admit that we might need to do things differently. We just can't seem to realize that if we try to deal with a child in anger or in a gruff or abusive tone the child most likely will react the same way. If we ask children why they acted a certain way, and then listen to them, we might learn that we caused the negative reaction. I like to try to get youth involved in organizing projects, especially community activities. In an earlier period in my life, I taught leader- ship skills to high school students and gave them the task of organiz- ing and coordinating hands-on projects. ere will always be some who are hesitant to accept responsibility and leadership roles, but there are many people of all ages who will lead if given the opportu- nity. Sometimes, if we suggest a project, there is reluctance of people to step forward and lead, but if it is their idea, get out of the way. Many of the projects chosen by my students were community service projects. In some cases, it was a matter of organizing a team to help with an existing program; for some it involved rais- ing money and collecting supplies to assist with an existing pro- gram. e most innovative projects were those in which the youth came up with ideas for new projects and led or coordinated the activities from start to finish. A lot of the projects in which the youth participated were organized and coordinated by adults, but the young participants added enthusiasm and gave renewed em- phasis to the efforts of the adults, while making a bigger impres- sion on those who benefited from the project. We encourage our children at the Home to get involved in community programs. It lets them see there are other people who might have a greater need than their own, and it often adds special meaning to those who benefit from the participation of the children. Our Home is truly blessed by the charity of a group of special young ladies. Little known to most of our Masons and supporters of the Masonic Home for Children is the fact that, for the tenth consecutive year, our Home has been selected as the primary charity effort of the winners of the Little Miss North Carolina Scholarship Pageant. In the past nine years the donations of the LMNC Queens have totaled more than $87,000. Over that nine- year period, only nine of our Masonic lodges have donated more for our children than these young ladies and their families. Who are these young ladies, and from where do they come? Girls compete in seven different age groups ranging from 15 months to 18 years old in pageants throughout all areas of North Carolina. e area pageant winners participate in a week-long LMNC State Pageant in July. e competition is similar to the Miss North Carolina Pageant with modifications and consid- erations for the age of the participants. e level of talent and maturity displayed by the young ladies is absolutely amazing. Ob- viously, the highlight of the final evening is the crowning of the eight new queens (one from each of seven age groups and the one who accumulated the highest overall score in all categories of competition), but the highlight for the outgoing queens has been the announcement of the fundraising success for their charity and the presentation of the check. Each queen participates in other charitable activities throughout the year, but MHCO is their main effort. It is such a special moment for me to receive their check to the Home and to try to explain the deep significance of their charitable efforts that I try to make time in my schedule to attend at least the last night of the pageant. see OAKS, page 4
