Michigan Gamma Chapter ACTIVE CHAPTER SUPPORTS ALEX BERLIN '13 IN FIGHT AGAINST CANCER Michigan gaMMa ReMains successful M ichigan Gamma has had another successful year at MSU. We have had consecutive semesters with the largest number of men going through recruitment and we hope to continue this accomplishment year after year. Rechartering has allowed us to increase our brotherly bonds and Michigan Gamma maintains our quest to be a Zeal Chapter. We will not give up until we accomplish this achievement. Keeping Our Grades Up Last semester we focused more on academics and moved up three spots, with an eighth-ranked GPA of 3.016, an improvement from our spring 2014 GPA of 2.965. We are now solidly in the top one-third of all IFC fraternities on campus. This is certainly an improvement but not yet where we strive to be. We are proud to have won the Stuart Zoock Outstanding Advisory Board Award. Scholarship Chairman Mike Popielec '17 implemented heavy study hours Monday through Thursday with incentives and rewards for brothers with the most hours each week. Philanthropy Update We held our first Ball for Berlin charity football game for Alex Berlin '13, 23, who was diagnosed with Ewing's Sarcoma right after graduating last May. We raised over $1,000 for Miles2Give, which is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for Ewing's sarcoma cancer. SAE also participated in the third annual Puck-Off for Cancer Hockey game vs. Sigma Chi. Last year we raised over $3,000 for the Huntsman Cancer Institution and this year we raised over $13,000 with some of the proceeds going toward Miles2Give. Alex played in the hockey game last year not knowing he had a tumor in his lower leg. This year's game means much more for everyone involved and we hope Alex's inspiration will help us reach our fundraising goal for this philanthropic event. Athletics of SAE Our brothers possess great athletic abilities while maintaining great sportsmanship. We hold one another accountable for our actions and understand who The Ball For Berlin flag football game philanthropy event was played November 15 against Beta Zeta in honor of Alex Berlin '13, who is battling Ewing's sarcoma cancer, and raised $1,000 for the Miles2Give fundraiser. we represent. Intramural Chairman Chase M. Voelker '13 believes this is a reason we have been so successful on the playing field. Kappa Alpha Theta hosted a softball tournament, which we lost in a nail-bitter to Sigma Chi and took runner-up. Although we didn't win the championship, it was great to help raise support for Court Appointed Special Advocates. We also won Alpha Phi's Capture a Phi tournament where we supported the Mildred Cursh Foundation. We take pride in our sports and enjoy giving our brothers time to bond with one another while competing. "Winners always win!" Alumni Relationships Sought by Active Chapter Our brothers seek to maintain relationships with older alumni. The connections and experiences of our alumni could benefit our brothers tremendously in the workplace in the future. For Founders' Day, March 9, we sent brothers to the Detroit Gentlemen, the Detroit Alumni Association of Sigma Alpha Epsilon for dinner and an evening dedicated to SAE's rich history. We are also in the midst of planning another alumni golf outing for this summer. We look forward to building relationships with alumni, as we need their support for growth and expansion of our chapter. The SAE chapter at Michigan State thanks all alumni for their support and care, and we invite you to stop by the house and meet the brothers. Fraternally, Chandler Berlin '17 Alumni Relations Chairman berlinch@msu.edu Michigan Gamma won IFC intramural football, beating Lambda Chi to finish out an undefeated season. The Sigma Chi vs. SAE Puck-Off hockey game was played March 28, with proceeds benefiting the Huntsman Institute and Miles2Give Foundation. Michigan Gamma participated in the True Gentlemen Day of Service on April 18 by cleaning up their stretch of the highway and the Grand River.
