Hidden above many of the shops and Downtown businesses are charming apartments in which many military families call home. One such family is Jen and James Bordelon, whose Hay Street apartment has just as much charm as it does flair. James and Jen's home, a beautiful apartment complete with exposed brick, a picturesque view of bustling Hay Street, and a rooftop patio overlooking Downtown, is the perfect fit for the young couple. Previously living in Washington D.C., the pair chose to live Downtown to take advantage of the unique culture and atmosphere the area has to offer. Both from the South, the two appreciate the charm in the "Cosmopolitan part of town," as Jen refers to it. "We wanted to take advantage of the Downtown area while we could," says Jen, wanting to enjoy the perks of "city life" before they have children. And the couple is doing just that. From frequenting the restaurants Downtown, to grabbing coffee with local shop owners, the couple is taking full advantage of all the area offers. The two said the amount of military families living Downtown may be surprising. Referring to Downtown as a "hidden military community," they say most couples they meet living Downtown have the same appreciation for the culture of the community. "We like to take advantage of the Downtown music and culture," James says, with Jen echoing how much the couple enjoys nights at The Cameo and dinners at many of the great restaurants. "Plus, we like to support what's going on Downtown," James adds. Culture & Charm: Living in the of America's Hometown And they say they caught it at the perfect time. "Whenever I talk to older residents of the community, they always say 'you caught it at the upswing,'" James says. This may be attributed to the ever-growing efforts to revitalize Downtown, which continues to help the area grow. With locally-owned cafés, upscale boutiques, and family-owned restaurants flourishing in the area, it's easy to see why the area is attracting so many new residents. He also says many people he talks to have long-term plans of staying, which is evident of the upswing of the area. With Fort Bragg just a short drive away, Downtown is a great fit for military families. James also appreciates the tight-knit community Downtown offers, which gives him peace of mind. He knows shop owners, residents and their friends alike are "keeping an eye on Jen and keeping her engaged," when he's away with work. They both also appreciate Downtown because they understand the military and the lifestyle that comes with it. With a tight-knit community, convenient locally-owned shops and restaurants, and the hometown feeling that Fayetteville is so famous for, many military families are happy to call Downtown Fayetteville home.
