64 www.thejewelrybook.com Rings of Time The Les Epoques capsule collection by Licia Mattioli L I C I A M A T T I O L I D E S I G N E R P R O F I L E Designer Licia Mattioli has released a time capsule of rings from the 20s, 40s, and 60s in her latest venture called "Les Epoques." This celebration of "art through the years" is a common artistic theme for the house of Mattioli known for retrospective collections inspired by everything from the famed portraits of Arcimboldo, to the red "Lips" couch created by Salvador Dali in honor of Mae West. Licia Mattioli, an entrepreneur, former attorney and mother of two, partnered with her father Luciano Mattioli, an engineer, to expand on their 1995 partial acquisi- tion of Antica Ditta Marchisio, the company who held the oldest gold hallmark in Turin. After renovation and reorganization, the brand of Mattioli was born. Under the creative guidance of Licia Mattioli, the company has grown signifi cantly and continues to follow Mattioli's philosophy of "developing stories of dreams." Her latest Les Epoques collection does just that – capturing the cultural and artistic dreams of past eras. Each decade – the 20s, 40s and 60s – were known for bold advancement in art and design. Each ring tells the story in fi ne detail, each a perfect statement or "cocktail" ring worthy of its age. An homage to the Art Nouveau movement of the 20s described by Mattioli as "a period dedicated to naturalisms and Rococò entaglements," is the opulent pink gold and aquamarine ring. The smoldering rodolite set in a linear, architectural setting of rose gold captures the "rational minimalism" of the 40s. Finally, "the spirit of new times and the colorful fun of the sixties" is expressed in a pop art, color blocked ring of "vitamin shapes and hues." The pale pink morganite is set against pastel enamel and bold blocks of color. These rings are a revival of glamorous days gone by, igniting a shared cultural memory of time and place.
