Because they have had no hunter pressure, it can be somewhat easy to set up very close to their roost and call an unsuspect- ing gobbler into fi ring range. On the other hand there is what is known as a tom being henned up. Henned up means a tom is surrounded by hens and is very unlikely to leave them in order to come to where a hunter is set up. This happens a lot in the early season. It's the old adage, a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush. And for a big gobbler, he is thinking, "ten hens next to me are better than two on the other end of the fi eld." There have been many hunters who have had to watch a fi eld of turkeys fi fty yards out of range simply because they were content to stay where they were. Another way a gobbler gets henned up is when a lone hen actively works to keep it from leaving her. In fact, she will pur- posefully lead her man in a completely different direction – away from you. I'm not sure if she senses danger or what, but I know she just doesn't like what seems to be transpiring. There have been many times in my life where my wife has led me away from a situation that just didn't seem right to her. For me, I was the naïve and gullible guy who thought she was crazy and overprotective. I thought the sound of other hens where just honest cries for help. Some of them were but others were a subtle trap. The problem was that I would have never seen the trap if it were not for my wife's keen intuition and outside perspective. Now men, I know that most women are eager to admit that we men are clueless and naïve. They will readily brag that without them we would do stupid things be- cause we are too trusting of all people and situations. Well, after many, many years of marriage I am fi nally admitting they are right. And you need to as well. My only consolation in writ- ing this is knowing that my wife will probably not be reading this particular article and therefore admitting she is right will not be as hard to swallow. The good thing however when it comes to something as important as this, is that I still win even when she is right. Wildlife R e s o u r c e s C o m m i s s i o n will open the statewide spring hunting season for wild turkeys — male and bearded turkeys only — on April 11 through May 9, preceded by a youth-only week from April 4-10. During the youth-only season, turkey hunting is only allowed for those younger than 16 years, who must be accompanied by a licensed adult at least 21 years old. An adult may accompany more than one youth during a particular hunt. The adult cannot harvest a turkey. Each youth must report harvest to the Wildlife Commission through a Big Game Harvest Report Card. License-exempt youths should report their harvest using a Big Game Harvest Report Card for license-exempt hunters. The daily limit is one turkey and the possession and season limit is two turkeys per hunter, only one of which may be taken during youth season. The Wildlife Commission's Home From The Hunt™ campaign reminds turkey hunters of basic safety guidelines, such as identifying a target before pulling the trigger. "The main consideration for turkey season — or any hunting season — is to positively identify your target and what is beyond your target before pulling the trigger," said Travis Casper, state hunter education coordinator. "If there is any doubt in your mind, don't shoot." Top 5 Safety Tips Never stalk a turkey, which only increases your chances of being mistaken for game. Leave the area if you think another hunter is already there. Alert another hunter to your presence by saying "Stop" in a loud voice. Never wear red, white, blue or black in the fi eld — the colors of a tom's head and body. Make sure your decoy or harvested turkey isn't visible when you transport it. Top 5 Regulatory Considerations Promptly and properly validate and register a Big Game kill. Use of pistols, rifl es or blac k powder rifl es is prohibited. Dogs are not allowed for hunting wild turkey. No hunting of an area where bait has been placed until 10 days after all bait has been consumed or removed. Electronic or recorded calls are not allowed for hunting wild turkey. Regulations and restrictions on turkey hunting, including information on youth season, are available in the 2014-15 Inland Fishing, Hunting and Trapping Regulations Digest, beginning on page 56, and available online at www.ncwildlife.org.
