Often to their surprise I reply, "You are right; you will never get over your loss." Losing someone to death creates a vacancy that cannot be fi lled as it was before. The price of loving someone is the grief and emptiness we feel after they are gone. Grief is not about "getting over our loss", but learning how to heal emotionally. Some people try to bring back their life by denying their loss or by substituting other things or people, but to no avail. A wise person once told me, that a person's loss must be absorbed. The best therapy for a grieving person is to fi rst accept the fact that their loved one is gone and then began to live their life once more, one day at a time. Yes, there will be times of sorrow and of pain, but there will also be times of joy and gladness. You should never try to forget the one who meant much to you; rather allow the memories of their life to make a difference in how you relate to others. You will fi nd yourself beginning to live your life with a dimension that brings the past, present and future together. The author, Frederick Buechner put it this way, "Maybe the most sacred function of memory is just that: to render the distinction between past, present, and future ultimately meaningless; to enable us at some level of our being to inhabit that same eternity which it is said that God himself inhabits.
