5 The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, March 27, 2015 By Andrew Warren TV Media Heed the 'Call': No matter what, there are always babies being born in London's East End, and a team of nurses is always there to help bring the mewling new life into the world. That's right, "Call the Mid- wife," that charmingly touch- ing period drama set in Lon- don in the late 1950s and ear- ly 1960s, is almost back. The fourth season of the BBC drama has its premiere on this side of the pond Sun- day, March 29, on PBS, and a few new folks are joining its already stellar cast. Charlotte Ritchie ("Fresh Meat") joins as Barbara Gil- bert, a young and enthusiastic nurse who's newly arrived at the convent and quickly wins everyone over with her sweet personality and eagerness to do right. On the flip side, Linda Bassett ("Lark Rise to Candle- ford") joins the cast as the snobby Phyllis Crane, a veter- an nurse with a fancy car and her own ideas on how the convent should be run — ideas that she's not afraid to share. Annabelle Ap- sion is also step- ping up to the plate as Violet Gee, a charming widow and own- er of a popular local shop who will strike up a friendship with Fred Buckle (Cliff Parisi, "East- Enders"). Apsion is a well- known fixture of British televi- sion, having long held parts in the comedies "Shameless" and "Doc Martin." Olympic heroes: It's a story that's nearly as old as time it- self: a young man of seeming- ly humble origins discovers the truth of his heritage, and that he has a great destiny to fulfill. Whether it's Harry Pot- ter or Luke Skywalker, the ze- ro-to-hero of destiny story runs throughout our culture everywhere you look. Set to premiere Thursday, April 2, "Olympus" tells the story of Hero, a selfless young man on a hero's journey to learn the truth about his heri- tage. Hero himself is played by Tom York, a relative newcom- er to the screen who's re- curred in Fox's "Tyrant." His father, the tyrannical King Ae- geus, is played by Graham Shiels, a more established ac- tor who's been in "True Blood" and "Arrow," and even popped up in last sum- mer's huge Hollywood hit "Guardians of the Gal- axy." It offers an exten- sive cast for a story of epic proportions. A historical retelling of the classics this is not — this story of men, women and gods looks like a rollicking good time, though. "Olympus" premieres Thursday, April 2, on Syfy.
