T he spring semester has been exciting for Illinois Beta as we are officially off suspension with the University of Illinois. The executive board has been working diligently to implement new initiatives to prevent problems from occurring again and to cement Illinois Beta as a prominent chapter at the University. Some new initiatives include a new committee system under the executive board, a refined judicial board process, and an increased effort toward philanthropy. ILBE HAS MORE THAN 150 MEMBERS Despite being on suspension, we recruited and initiated 34 members last fall and nine this spring and now boast over 150 members. However, with this growth, our members have felt overwhelmed in chapter meetings and discussions. By implementing this new committee system, more members have been able to voice their opinion and impact chapter decisions. With the national fraternity's decision to eliminate pledgeship a year ago, Illinois Beta has placed even more importance on recruitment. Active brothers have been constantly involved in the recruitment process to ensure that we bid promising young men. Even though there has been much skepticism around this new regulation, our chapter hasn't experienced any serious roadblocks in recruiting and maintaining new initiates. SOCIAL PROBATION LIFTED Since our suspension has ended, our social probation has also been lifted. Our social chairman has worked hard to prepare a full social calendar and members are rejoicing around this increase in activity. While planning we have been in close communication with fraternity and sorority affairs to make sure every regulation is being followed. ACADEMICS ON THE RISE Our chapter reported a 3.27 GPA for the fall semester. Over the past few semesters, we have been climbing the GPA rankings and now place 15th among fraternities. While we still have work to do we are proud of our progress. PHILANTHROPY EFFORTS INCREASE We held our largest philanthropy event of the semester, Paddy Murphy Week, in Fraternity Park April 20-25. We sponsored the American Heart Association, an especially important cause with the death of the mother of Ryan Ingram '16 still in recent memory. We plan to host two additional philanthropy events. Whether in philanthropy, academics, social events, or athletics, Illinois Beta continues to improve. We are proud of our current position and owe much of our success to the alumni who laid a solid foundation for us. We plan to host two or more alumni events this semester and will reach out to you when these events are finalized. If you're ever in Champaign, please drop by the house and meet some of the brothers. We look forward to reconnecting with you.
