NOW Serving Cleveland and Rutherford Counties MARTHA ROACH NOVAK Martha Ann King Roach Novak, age 86, of Forest City passed away Sunday, March 15, 2015. She was born May 7, 1928 in Rutherford County & was a daughter of the late James Thomas & Wilma Stalnaker King. Martha Ann was a graduate of Cool Springs High School Class of 1945 & served as Executive Secretary of the Forest City Chamber of Commerce where she retired with more than 25 years. Following her retirement, she worked for Southeastern Eye Center driving patients to & from their appoint- ments a& was a member of the Rutherford Hospital Auxiliarys. She was preced- ed in death by her first husband, James Lee "Jimmy" Roach in 1989, her second husband, Jim Novak, & her beloved son, Thomas Madison Roach in February of this year as well as brothers, Tommy King & Al King. Survivors include 2 sons, Timothy Scott Roach, Sr. of Rutherfordton, Benjamin Lee Roach & wife Judith Browne Roach of Raleigh, brother, Rudolph Lee King of Dunn, sister, Carole King Womble & husband Wilson of High Point, 7 grandchildren & 3 great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held in the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. J. O'Neil Haynes officiating. Interment followed in the Cool Springs Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials be made to First United Methodist Church, 341 E. Main St. Forest City, NC 28043 or First United Methodist Church, 264 N. Main St. Rutherfordton, NC 28139. Padgett and King Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. NORMAN MORSE GREIG Mr. Norman Morse Greig, 81 peacefully passed Monday March 16, 2015. Mr. Greig was born and raised in Chimney Rock & was the son of the late Norman & Elizabeth Greig. In addition to his parents he was preced- ed in death by his sister Alice. After serving with the Army in Germany Mr. Greig returned to Polk County & was employed with C.P. Clare in Fairview until his retirement. Surviving are one sister Margot Greig of Reston, VA & 2 neph- ews Greg Balot of Polk City, FL & Randy Balot of Swannanoa. No formal services will be held at this time. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Foothills Humane Society, Inc. 989 Little Mountain Rd Columbus, NC 28722. Crowe's Mortuary and Crematory Rutherfordton is assisting the family DOROTHY "JO" DIXON Dorothy "Jo" Dixon, age 71, of Spartanburg, SC passed away, March 19, 2015. Dorothy was the daughter of the late Rev. Furman & Vivian McIntyre. She was a retired music director for North Spartanburg Church of God. Left to cherish her memory are her husband Wesley Dixon; 3 daugh- ters Darlene McEntire of Rutherfordton; Pamela Rumbaugh of Rutherfordton; & Penny Butler of Anchorage, Alaska; 7 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren; 3 step children, 10 step grandchildren; 2 step great grandchildren. Services were held at Gilkey Church of God. Burial took place in the church cemetery. Rev. Larry Filppo & Rev. Chris Kennedy officiated. Crowe's Mortuary and Crematory is assisting the family. C. P. QUEEN C. P. Queen, age 90, husband of Sally Goode Queen of Rutherfordton passed away Thursday March 19, 2015. A native of Shelby, C. P. was the son of the late Clemmie Presley Queen Sr. & Ella Smith Queen Tolleson & was preceded in death by his daughter Sylvia Freeman. He was a member of Southern Baptist Church & a retired weaver for Mastercraft. C.P. served his country in the US Army during WWII. Left to cherish his memory, in addition to his wife Sally, is a daugh- ter Martha Norton of Morganton, grandchildren Scott (Jan) McDougal of Morganton, Michael McDougal of Morganton, Angie (David) Biggerstaff of Rutherfordton & Jill Hutchins (Johnny) of Bristol, Va., 5 great grand- children & 2 great great grandchildren. Graveside services were held at Southern Baptist Church Cemetery with the Rev. John Perry officiating. Military hon- ors were provided by the Rutherford County Veterans Honor Guard. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County or Southern Baptist Church. Crowe's Mortuary is assisting the family. ERBY BAXTER PADGETT Erby Baxter Padgett, "Scott" age 61, of Asheville completed his heaven- ly journey to join family and friends in Christ on Thursday, March 19th, 2015. He loved to read, dis- cuss world issues, music, and had a great sense of humor. Most of all he loved God, his family, and friends. Scott was the son of the late Erby and Georgia Mae Padgett. Left to cherish his memory are his sisters Jackie Arrowood, and Joy Saunders (Kirk); broth- ers Forrest Padgett (Pat), William Padgett, Mike Padgett (Franie); stepfa- ther Arthur Amos; special friends. Services were held at Mountain Creek Baptist Church in Rutherfordton. Crowe's Mortuary is assisting the Padgett Family. VIRGINIA BLADES RUCKER Virginia Blades Rucker, 101, of Forest City, passed away Tuesday, March 17, 2015. Daughter of the late James Bishop & Pearl Robertson Blades of New Bern, she was also prede- ceased by her husbands, C. William Biggerstaff of Forest City, Albert F. Rucker, originally from Hubbard, Ohio, a step- son, Clay Cole of Oak Island, & 1 grandchild, John Newton Hunt. Mrs. Rucker was a reporter/editor for the Forest City Courier from March 1946-1966; then a contributing editor from March 1969 until January, 2006. Mrs. Rucker joined the First United Methodist Church in 1933, was a Sunday School teacher, president & was given a life membership in the Woman's Society. She was also author of a book- let on the church windows. She was presi- dent of the NC Press Women, the Forest City Woman's Club, served on boards of the NC Mental Health Association, Flat Rock Play House, Rutherford Mental Health Association, Vocational Workshop, Dept. of Social Services, County Library & Mooneyham Library, & was an Associate of the NC Museum of History. She was the first woman recipient of the Forest City Kiwanis Club's Citizen of the Year, First Woman of the Year cho- sen by the Forest City Junior Woman's Club, & was named Woman in History by the Griffith Rutherford Chapter, DAR. Mrs. Rucker served as first secretary of the Forest City Little League. She was also a volunteer for the Veteran's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Shelby Cleveland Memorial, & Rutherford Hospital. Survivors include a daughter, Virginia "Ginger" Biggerstaff Hunt & her husband, Charles Hunt of Forest City; a son, C. William "Bill" Biggerstaff Jr & wife, Sandra Searcy Biggerstaff of Concord; 9 grandchildren, 16, great-grandchildren & 5 great-great grandchil- dren. Also surviving are 1 step-daughter, Tama Rucker Vallarino & hus- band Mark of Fairbanks, Alaska; 2 stepsons, Rick Rucker & wife Dinah of Oak Island, & James Rucker & wife Sherry of Murrel's Inlet, & 5 step grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 o'clock Friday, April 17, 2015 in the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. J. O'Neil Haynes & Reverend Dr. George Thompson officiating. Visitation will be in the church parlor from one until two o'clock prior to the service. Inurnment of her ashes will be private for the immediate fami- ly in the Cool Springs Cemetery. The family respectfully request that in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the char- ity of the donor's choice. Padgett and King Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. DAN "BOWEEVIL" HARRIS, SR. Dan "Boweevil" Harris, Sr., age 71, of Forest City, passed away March 16, 2015. Born September 4, 1943 in Rutherford County, he was a son of the late Ralph Forrest Harris & Annie Lee Crotts Harris. Dan served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era & worked for Mastercraft a& Cone Jacquard as a supervisor for many years. He was a member of Harris First Baptist Church & enjoyed fishing, camping, wood- working, farming & raising animals. In addition to his par- ents, he was preceded in death by twin infant daughters, Tina & Tracy Harris; 4 half-brothers, Joe, Rupert, Michael & Herrin Callahan. Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Linda Harris; 2 sons, Dan Harris, Jr. & wife, Lori of Bostic & David Harris & wife, Melanie of Forest City; 2 sisters, Margaret Morrison & husband, Yates of Bostic & Jane Campfield & husband, Jerry of Forest City; 1 brother, Don Harris also of Forest City; moth- er-in-law, Dessie Hopper of Forest City. He is also survived by 4 grandchil- dren, Alex Harris, Lauren Harris, Adam Harris & wife, Harley & Taylor Harris. A memorial graveside service was held at th e Eternal Hills Memorial Park. Memorial donations are suggested to Hospice of Rutherford County, PO Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043 or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, PO Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148. Harrelson Funeral and Cremation Services is serving the family. MARVIN JACKSON SCOGGINS Marvin Jackson Scoggins, age 98, of Forest City, passed away Friday, March 20, 2015. Born February 18, 1917 in Savannah, Georgia, he was the son of the late Samuel Jefferson Scoggins & Mary Elizabeth Strickland Scoggins. In addition to his par- ents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lou Scoggins; 11 brothers & 4 sisters. Survivors include his children, Michael Scoggins, Jay Scoggins, Robin Vahle; sisters, Lucille Hutchins, Wanda Lane, Vivian Payne, Lucy Melton; brother, Grover S. Scoggins. He is also sur- vived by 5 grandchildren & numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service was conducted at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel.
