What are the risks of sitting too much? A: Researchers have linked sitting for long periods of time with a number of health concerns, including obesity and metabolic syndrome - a cluster of conditions that includes increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist and abnormal cholesterol levels. Too much sitting also seems to increase the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer. One recent study compared adults who spent less than two hours a day in front of the TV or other screen-based entertainment with those who logged more then four hours a day of recreational screen time. Those with greater screen time had a nearly 50% increased risk of death from any cause. They also had approximately a 125% increased risk of events associated with cardiovascular disease, such as chest pain or heart attack. The increased risk was separate from other traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as smoking or high blood pressure. Any extended sitting- such as behind a desk at work or behind the wheel- can be harmful. What's more, spending a few hours a week at the gym or otherwise engaged in moderate or vigorous activity doesn't seem to signi¿ cantly offset the risk. Rather, the solution seems to be less sitting and more moving overall. —Source: Mayo Clinic Not Just Oil, Pennzoil Brought to you by: Brought to you by: 828-245-0434 293 S. Savannah Davis pitched well this week recording over 20 strikeouts, while Sam Steed, Christian Beheler and Courtney Smith provided the needed defense. R-S Central's tough week just happened. They went 1-2 on the week by whipping Chase, and then barely falling on the road to both Kings Mountain 3-0 and Brevard 3-1. They host East Burke Tuesday and then Burns on Friday (3/27) before spring break. And then it's East Rutherford at home on 4/8 and Chase on the road the following day. Chase was downed by R-S Central and Crest this past week and have powerhouse Kings Mountain at home and winnable East Burke on the road before spring break. Thomas Jefferson won it's fi rst game of the season on Friday against Pine Lake Prep, but they won't play at home again until Lincoln Charter April 2. Baseball: East Rutherford continues to win and win them close. East (6-1, 4-1) are still doing it on the mound and remain steady on defense. It was a better offensive showing this week outscoring two opponents 14-2, but Coach Reynolds is still hoping for improvement at the plate as the season goes. R-S Central (3-3) went 1-1 last week and have Burns (3/27), Chesnee (4/1) before hosting East Rutherford on Monday (4/8). Chase suffered two losses last week, but will play at Chesnee on (4/2) and then host R-S Central (4/9). This week all three games will be in the road for the Trojans. Thomas Jefferson stated out 2-0, but have lost four in a row now. They don't play at McNair again until Tuesday (3/31). Girl's Soccer: Thomas Jefferson's team continues to impress at 3-0-1. Six players already have a goal on the season and Lily Nelson is doing a solid job as the keeper thus far. As for R-S Central, despite losing their top player for possibly the season they still sit 2-3 early on. The biggest surprise maybe at East Rutherford where they have won three of their last fi ve game and sit 3-3 on the year. They have speed in Emily Elgin and Parris Baker who can both score. NCAA Tourney: Three North Carolina schools are still alive in the NCAA Tourney at the time of this column. North Carolina, Duke and N.C. State. Duke and Carolina were no surprise, but for State to play as well as they have and upset a one seed is another. Which proves that the ACC is no slouch in basketball. They were 9-0 before losing their fi rst game on Sunday. Of the six ACC teams selected, Virginia is the only team that has exited from the ACC, meaning fi ve of 16 are from the conference. NASCAR: Four tires are better than two. And so Brad Keselowski proved that theory correct in a last lap pass of Kurt Busch to win at California. The tire decision came with just two laps remaining and a dominant Kurt Busch was stunned to say the least as Keselowski made the move to win. Busch in just his second race this season has two top tens and goes to Martinsville this weekend as the reigning champ of the event. Of course, this is one of my favorite weekends of the year and going to Martinsville. And if Jeff Gordon wants to resurrect his season, Martinsville couldn't come at a better time. Jimmie Johnson, Kevin Harvick, Denny Hamlin and Dale Earnhardt Jr. all come to mind as previous Martinsville winners. Joey Logano is due a win here and Kurt Busch is just due a win. While Busch comes back from strange circumstances, he has been on a mission. I will take Kurt Busch this weekend.
