She was born August 29, 1941 in Henrietta, NC and was a daughter of the late Bud William Willis, Jr. and Emily Jane Rollins Willis. Rachel was a gradu- ate of Tri-High School and a member of Advent Lutheran Church in Spindale. For many years she worked with her husband as the operat- ed Shaffer's Amoco Station in Alexander Mills and she was the cafeteria Manager at Isothermal Community College and the Mastercraft Corporation. She has also been a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and was past Worthy Matron. Her brother, James Glenn Willis preceded her in death. Survivors include her husband, Fred Shaffer, a son Frank Shaffer and his wife Leslie of Sylva, NC, two daughters, Jane Marie Shaffer of Rutherfordton, Melissa Ann Cothran and husband Jimmy of Clover, SC, a brother, Bud William Willis, III and wife Linda of Pawley's Island, SC, a sis- ter-in-law, Patsy Wills of Mooresboro and a cousin, Joan Benfield of Forest City. There are seven grandchil- dren and five great-grand- children. Funeral services were held at the Advent Lutheran Church in Spindale offi- ciated by the Reverend Ronald Fink. Interment followed in the Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Rutherford County, Post Office Box 336, Forest City, NC 28043. The Padgett and King Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. EVELYN BEASON Evelyn Beason, age 73, of Forest City, passed away Wednesday, March 11, 2015. Born May 7, 1941 in Wake County, NC, she was a daughter to the late Sherman and Ima Jones. She worked for Cone Mills for many years and was an on the road truck driver for Century Furniture and the owner and operator of the Tender Loving Care Day Care Center. Evelyn was a member of Fork Creek Baptist Church and enjoyed crocheting and flower gar- dening. In addition to her par- ents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Jimmy Powell and Ronnie Powell; three grandsons, Jermy Cole, Garrett Powell, William Powell; two brothers and three sisters. Survivors include her husband of twenty-seven years, John Beason; three daughters, Debra Hoyle and husband, Greg, Sherry Lewis and Ann Gaskins all of Forest City; two sons, Davie Powell and wife, Sherry and Tim Powell and wife, Angie all of Mooresboro; one brother, Ulysses Jones of Fayeteville, NC; seventeen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Billy Cogdell offi- ciating. Interment followed in Rutherford County Memorial Cemetery. EVELYN F. HEFLIN Evelyn F. Heflin passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2015. She was the daughter of the late Joe B. and Pearl M. Moore of Forest City. Evelyn was born in Forest City and was a grad- uate of Cool Springs High School and received a B.S. from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. Evelyn started the Little Red School Daycare in Forest City, which she managed for 10 years. She then taught in the Teachers Associate Program at ICC in Spindale before retiring in 2007. She thorough- ly enjoyed teaching and encouraging her students to excel. Evelyn loved life and lived each day to the full- est. She enjoyed fishing, gardening and collecting beautiful antiques to dec- orate her home. She also enjoyed entertaining and always had a celebration for birthdays and special occasions. Her favorite time was spent with family, as she was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Evelyn had a way of bring- ing out the best in people and making everyone feel special. She was a friend to all and touched the lives of many. She is survived by her husband, Ronald J. Heflin, two daughters; Deborah F. LaFontaine of Asheville and Mary Jo Henderson of Dallas, Tx., three sons; Charles D. Holt (Sarah) of Rutherfordton, Michael J. Holt (Susan) of Leicester and Michael R. Heflin of Lincolnton, 13 grandchil- dren and 10 great grand- children. A Celebration of Life was held in the Chapel of Crowe's Mortuary in Rutherfordton, NC. Crowe's Mortuary & Crematory is assisting the family. EVELYN WRIGHT WATKINS Evelyn Wright Watkins, age 88 of Forest City passed away Thursday, March 12, 2015. She was born March 29, 1926 in Jackson, Mississippi and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Forest City. She was a member of the Asbury Sunday School Class, the Roe Walker Circle and served on var- ious committees in the local church as well as the District and Conference. She had a great love for the church and its people. Evelyn was a full part- ner with Robert in their photography studio, artisti- cally as well as administra- tively. She also partnered with her husband in their faithful fund raising and support for the American Cancer Society/Relay for Life. She was also a member of the D.A. R. and had served as Chapter Historian. She was preceded in death by her mother, Lanta Case Wright, sister, Shirley Wright Ramsey and her daughter, Ann Watkins. Survivors include her husband of 71 years, Robert M. Watkins, two daughters, Linda Watkins Freeman and husband Richard of Dothan, AL, Reverend Pamela Jane Watkins of Durham, NC, and a grandson, Richard Freeman, Jr. of Dothan. AL. Funeral services were held in the First United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. J O'Neil Haynes, Reverend Wesley Judy, and Reverend Pamela Jane Watkins offi- ciating. Interment was held in the Cool Springs Cemetery. The Padgett and King Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. CATHERINE EUGENIA TONEY MELTON Catherine Eugenia Toney Melton, age 75, of Ellenboro passed away Thursday, February 12, 2015. She was born September 6, 1939 in Rutherford County and was a daughter of the late Clarence Lawson Toney and Cumi Mull Toney. She was a retired bookkeep- er for Joe Waters Auto Parts where she worked for 28 years. Catherine was a member of Corinth Baptist Church, a graduate of Sunshine High School Class of 1957 and was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by broth- er, Wade Toney, sisters, Carolynn Toney Scruggs, infant sister, Shirley Faye Toney and grandson, Jerad Melton. Survivors include her husband, Norman Melton, sons, Phillip Melton and wife Judy of Bostic, Greg Melton of Ellenboro, daughter, Melissa Melton Lincoln and husband David of Moore, SC, brothers, Robert Toney of Spindale, Dennis Toney of Rutherfordton, Bennie Toney of Bostic, and a sis- ter Vivian Toney Champion of Bostic. There are also four grandchildren, Justin Melton and girlfriend, Dee Lowery, Michael Melton and fiancée, Jenny Vogt, Alysa McGinnis and Destiny Lincoln. Funeral service was held in the Corinth Baptist Church with Reverend Mike Connor, Reverend Ad Hopper and Reverend David Jendrey officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The Padgett and King Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. DENNIE NOLLIS CANADAY Dennie Nollis Canaday, age 72, of Ellenboro, NC, passed away Thursday, March 12, 2015. A native of McDowell County, West Virginia, he was the son of the late Basil Glen Canaday and Pearl Nichols Canaday, a painter and precision sheet metal mechanic with Comsat Laboratories, for- mer deacon with the Mt. Paran Presbyterian Church in Randallstown, Maryland, and was lovingly known by his grandchildren as "Paw- paw". He was preceded in death by a brother, Wayne Larry Canaday. Survivors include his wife, Patricia Canaday of the home, a son, Wayne Canaday and his wife Amanda of Ellenboro, a daughter, Lori Huddleston and her husband William of Ellenboro, three broth- ers, Billy Canaday and his wife Alice of NC, Richard Canaday of Florida, Athal Canaday of West Virginia, a sister, Dollie Perkins of Florida, four grand- children, Emily and Kelly Huddleston, and Morghyn and Jackson Canaday. TODD SMITH Todd Smith, age 56 of Forest City, passed away Friday, March 13, 2015. A native of Rutherford County, he was a son of Shirley Griffin Smith of Forest City and the late T. Pryor Smith. Todd had worked for many years as a building contractor, was an avid fisherman, and a for- mer member of the Forest City Fire Department. He was also a member of First Baptist Church, Forest City. In addition to his moth- er, survivors include his son, Collin Smith of Forest City; a brother, Tommy Smith and wife Crystal of Forest City; and his nieces, Kaley and Ailey Smith. Graveside services were held in the Cool Springs Cemetery with Reverend Tony Spencer and Dr. Bobby Gantt offi- ciating. LARRY NELSON BAILEY Larry Nelson Bailey, age 68 of Forest City, passed away Friday, March 13, 2015. A native of Rutherford County, he was the son of the late Alvin King Bailey and Hazel Moore Bailey. Larry was a retired proj- ect scheduler for Duke Energy, and a member of Sandy Mush Baptist Church where he was a former deacon. He was also a former Hospice vol- unteer, an avid fisherman, enjoyed outdoor activities, and recently enjoyed paint- ing and drawing. He loved his Lord, his family and friends. Survivors include his wife Rita H. Bailey of the home; son, Jason Bailey of Forest City; daugh- ter, Kristin B. Harmon and husband Chris of Rutherfordton; his moth- er-in-law, Eunice Harrill of Forest City; sisters, Diane Callahan and Gloria Hodge of Rutherfordton; and his aunt, Ruby Kirby of Rutherfordton. Funeral services were held in the Sandy Mush Baptist Church with Reverend Richard Davis officiating. Interment fol- lowed in the Rutherford C o u n t y M e m o r i a l Cemetery. Born November 29, 1950 in St. Louis, Missouri, she was a daughter to Duane Robert Graeff & the late Mary Nora Collier Graeff. She was a home- maker who was devoted to her family. She was a member of Forest City Foursquare Church. In addition to her moth- er, she was preceded in death by 2 infant great grandchildren, Madison & Mason White. Besides her father, she is survived by her step-mother, Mary Ellen Graeff; 2 daughters, Karen Suttle & fiancé, Lee of Salisbury & Kim Smith & husband, Tommy of Henrietta; 4 sons, Chris Graeff of Ogden, Utah, Kevin Johnson & fiancé, Renee of Mooresboro, Kenneth Johnson & wife, Lydia of Cowpens & Steven Ponder of Forest City; 7 sisters, Ruth Wise of Wichita, KS, Margaret Massey of Richmond, VA, Sandra Long of Wichita, Patricia Ramirez of Lawrence, KS, Linda Walburn of Oskaloosa, KS, Terry Giles of Wichita & Kathy Burley of Utica, KS. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted at the Harrelson Funeral Chapel with Reverend Bobby Gettys, Reverend Kenneth Linder and Mr. David Linder offi- ciated.
