10 | March/April 2015 publisher's note Dean Smith Remembered Michael Jordan and Dean Smith by Zeke Smith I n this issue of CityView we are focusing on "Women in Busi- ness," in which we have seven- teen professional ladies that are featured. Also, this month we are featuring brides and weddings. My wife and I celebrated our 45th wed- ding anniversary in December. My wife deserves all the credit and I still love her like I did 45 years ago. Several weeks ago, an icon in North Carolina died. ere has been much written about the infa- mous basketball coach Dean Smith of UNC Chapel Hill, but I wanted to share some encounters I had with the acclaimed coach over the years. My first was in September 1981 at the Jack Nicklaus golf exhibition put on by the Rams club at Chapel Hill. I went to the event with the late J.P. Riddle and we ended up playing in the tournament with Jack. Mr. Riddle was a big donor to the Rams Club and he used his influence to allow us to play with Jack. And although there were 80 other donors there, Mr. Riddle prevailed. We won the event and at the cocktail party aerwards I spent 15 minutes talking to Coach Smith, mainly about golf and some basketball. Fast forward three years later when my son Bob and I attended basketball final game at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. We had great seats and were two rows behind Coach Smith (he was there to watch Sam Perkins and Michael Jordan play). When he got up to go to the bathroom and walked past our seats I spoke with him and he remembered me from the golf tournament and that I was friends with Mr. Riddle. I found that to be a most impressive memory. But, my last encounter was the best. When our son Bob was home dying of can- cer, his brother arranged through Joe and Carol Quigg for Dean Smith to call Bob on his birthday, February 10, 2006. Bob told him of being in the last group cut from the 1994 JV team his freshman year and Bob reminded him of their meeting at the 1984 Olympics which Coach Smith remembered. It was a very kind thing for him to call a dying young man that idolized him and spend 10 meaningful minutes on the phone.
