Lonnie Tues. & Thurs (starting Nov. 11th) By Shanana Rain Golden-Bear Stephen Swift travels from place to place on his bicycle visiting notable and historic landmarks in the U.S., all the while spreading faith, hope and goodwill to those battling cancer — just as he has. Doctors diagnosed Swift with pancreatic cancer in March 2012 and gave him 18 months to live. Swift (pictured at right) decided to bike across the United States to heighten cancer awareness. He left Newport, Oregon May 2012. "I felt like giving up," Swift said Wednesday as he stopped in Quartzsite before heading to spend time with a friend in Bouse. "I know there are others out there that feel that way. I want them to know they don't have to give up. They need to just get out and do something. It doesn't have to be riding all over the U.S., but they can volunteer at a church, anything." Swift has traveled more than 11,000 miles in the past year living a minimalist existence. In New York, some- one stole his bike and many personal belongings. But Swift wasn't deterred. He said he continued to rely on the help of strangers, who helped him get a new bike, to keep him moving. It isn't always easy, he said, and some- times people don't believe his story. "Sometimes people just don't get it," he said. "They look at you and see a little scruff on your face and the dirt on your hands and they think that you're a homeless guy. But that's just what I had to face. People are people. They'll judge you no matter what." "It's not about needing money or a free meal; I'll work for the money if it's there just to keep going," Swift said. "But this isn't about my story. It's about other people's stories. I fi nd strength in others. And that's what keeps me going." With a sign strapped to the back of his bike stating: "BIKING ACROSS AMERICA - Don't judge someone unless you're in their shoes" Swift is building relations with strangers as he travels the countryside. Swift even has 28 notebooks full of hand printed messages from the people he has met on the way. He says some people call it a pilgrim- age, some call it a journey but he just calls it a bike ride. It's not just a bike ride, it's personal... | S R G-B Bouse, AZ - Regular meetings are held every other Friday from 9:30am to 2pm at the Bouse Booster Club building.
