Du Bois Award Luncheon Friday, March 20th 12 noon - 2 p.m. Former North Carolina Supreme Court Associate Justice and Fayetteville Native Patricia Timmons-Goodson has been selected by the Association of Social and Behavioral Scien- tists, Inc. (ASBS) to receive its annual W. E. B. Du Bois Award. This award will be presented at the luncheon where Justice Timmons-Goodson will also be the Keynote Speaker. The W. E. B. Du Bois Award was introduced in 1970 to honor outstanding social and behavioral scientists and civic leaders who have made significant contribu- tions to improve the lives of Black Americans. Past recipients of this prestigious award include prominent scholars, community leaders, and government officials. The Association of Social and Behavioral Scien- tists was founded in 1935 at Johnson C. Smith Uni- versity in Charlotte, North Carolina. Annually, social and behavioral scientists and other scholars from Historically Black Colleges and Universities host the conference as a forum to continue the work of ASBS to address issues that impact Blacks in the nation and beyond. While the majority of the Association's membership remains social and behavioral scientists, it is open to scholars from all academic disciplines and ethnicities. Former NC Supreme Court Associate Justice Patricia Timmons-Goodson to Receive Award from Association of Social and Behavioral Scientists, Inc. Former North Carolina Supreme Court Associate Justice Patricia Timmons-Goodson has been selected by the Association of Social and Behavioral Scientists, Inc. (ASBS) to receive its annual W. E. B. Du Bois Award. The Award will be presented to Justice Timmons-Goodson during the W. E. B. Du Bois Award Luncheon at 12:00 p. m., Friday, March 20, 2015 during the Association's 80 th Annual Conference to be held here in Fayetteville, March 18-21, 2015 at the Embassy Suites Hotel and Richard M. Wiggins Conference Center located at 4760 Lake Valley Drive. Justice Timmons-Goodson will serve as keynote speaker for the luncheon. The Association of Social and Behavioral Scientists was founded in 1935 at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina. Smith University (1996); the honorable Justice Henry E. Frye, former Chief Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court (2002); and U. S. Congresswoman, Alma S. Adams who served ten terms in the North Carolina General Assembly before being elected on November 12, 2014 to the U. S. Congress (2008). Justice Timmons-Goodson received her B. A. degree in Speech from UNC – Chapel Hill and her J.D. from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill School of Law. After working as a private attorney in Fayetteville, she became an Assistant District Attorney for the 12 th Prosecutorial District in 1981. She served as a Judge in the North Carolina 12 th Judicial District from 1984 to 1996 when she was appointed to the North Carolina Court of Appeals by Governor Jim Hunt. In February 2006, Justice Timmons- Goodson was appointed as an Associate Justice on the North Carolina Supreme Court by Governor Mike Easley. She retired from the Supreme Court in 2012. In 2014, President Barack Obama appointed Justice Timmons-Goodson to the U. S. Commission on Civil Rights. Justice Timmons-Goodson's personal and professional achievements, which include removing racial barriers, improving the lives of Black Americans, promoting equality, justice and civil rights for all people in Fayetteville, North Carolina and the United States, deserve honor and recognition.
