MARCH 4-10, 2015 UCW 11 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM "The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future." —Theodore Roosevelt. Fayetteville is a town full of history; history that we keep alive by recognizing the accomplishments of others. The Civil War was a pivotal point in American history. On March 7, the Fayetteville Area Transportation and Local History Museum will host a bus tour that will not only be informative, but also a great experience for children. During the bus tour, participants visit different locations in Fayetteville that have been preserved or marked for Civil War history. Staff from the museum will be present to point out the historical importance of each stop and answer any questions participants may have. While on the ride, the bus will make several stops at pivotal areas in the Battle of Fayetteville. There are 28 marked historical locations around Fayetteville and its surrounding areas. While driving downtown, its almost impossible not to see one. Some include The Market House where a small conflict between Confederate and Union soldiers took place, as well as Arsenal Park. Touring the areas that mark our history gives individuals a sense of humbleness and a chance to literally walk in the footsteps of others. There is importance in understanding the actions of people from the past and what their lives were like. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. This spring, a number of events will take place to mark the significant moments of the conflict. Fayetteville was a place of battle from March 11-14. Bill Sherman, the Union general known for his march through the South, sought the opportunity to destroy the Fayetteville Arsenal and the local newspaper. The greatest output of the Arsenal was work done by women manufacturing weapons that would have been sent wherever the fighting was occurring. During the Battle of Fayetteville, many homes met a fate similar to those in communities all over the region: They were engulfed in the flames set by Sherman's troops. As Confederate forces retreated from town, they burned the Clarendon Bridge to halt the Union forces that were chasing them. The Battle of Monroe's Crossroads occurred on a private area located on Fort Bragg. Monuments and many different grave sites have been dedicated to the soldiers who were buried there. To commemorate the 150th anniversary, the Museum of the Cape Fear Historical Complex has added three new exhibits that showcase different artifacts and rifles made at the arsenal. The tour will include a live fire cannon demonstration at the Cape Fear River by members of Braddy's Battery, 2nd N.C. Light Artillery. The tour will require moderate walking. There is a $5 fee. Bus Tour Commemorates 150th Anniversary of Civil War by CANDACE CARR The U.S. Arsenal in Fayetteville was the primary target of Union forces led by Gen. William Sherman when they marched into Fayetteville.
