By Joanne Winer Anita Carlson, co-founder with her late husband Doc, has been sending packages to the troops in harm's way for many years now, and has stated that as long as there are troops who need them, she will continue with her mission. Since Doc passed away, she has had volunteers and family members help- ing her pack up and send two boxes to each unit every two weeks every month, and some extra dur- ing special holidays. They have had as many as 10 units at a time, but are currently sending packages VFW Riders donate to Operation Hero Comfort to 5 units. These boxes are fi lled with non-perishable food items like peanut butter, cans of tuna, beef (no pork products allowed) chicken, turkey, and other fi sh snacks, as well as cookies, crackers, pickles (plastic bottles only) and cereal bars, granola bars, candy, jerky, canned fruit, drink mixes, coffee, creamer, etc. They also send non-food packages with books, movies, DVDs CDs, magazines, games, puzzle books, small stuffed toys, stationary items, toiletry and hygiene items, and things like socks, cool collars and more. Each one of these packages are over $15 to send, and sometimes items are needed to be purchased to fi ll the boxes. These are the biggest costs of the group, and every donation is very important--their only fundraiser is their Silent Auction in December, and | S D M they just recently tried a Yard Sale that was successful and may be done again. Operation Hero Comfort just re- ceived a check from the VFW Riders group from District 1, delivered to Anita by Julie Anderson--it was for $200 and this will go a long way to helping get the packages out. Anita, on behalf of Operation Hero Comfort members, accepted the check and wants to personally thank everyone who donated to it to help. If you have items for the packages, or to donate for the next Silent Auction or Yard Sale, please call Anita at 763-639-9330.
