she says she's seen mixed reviews on how the device handles email. But at a comparably low selling price — just $199 — sluggish email reading may be a chance many are willing to take. And that price point, which is smack dab in between the prices for limited function- ing e-readers and the higher functioning tablets, has many analysts predicting that the Kindle Fire is bound to ignite buyers' interest this Christmas. How- ever, Suehle suspects that many Kindle Fire purchasers this year will be in the market for a tablet computer next year. "I think it's going to turn out to be a gateway to more fully-featured tablets for a lot of people when they realize that they could be doing a lot more," Suehle said. "From my point of view, that's a win for Android since those who came via the Kindle Fire will likely look for a full Android tablet next." But, she says, no matter how power- ful the tablets are right now, they're still not a substitute for a notebook or desk- top computer for most people. "We have this collective conscious- ness of tablets as the future device," Suehle said. "But…they're not that easy to type on. For those whose laptop ex- periences mostly involve light web browsing or email, a tablet is probably enough. But for someone who writes a lot, likes gaming more advanced than what comes from apps, or wants to re- ally create things rather than consume them, a tablet isn't there yet." If you're still puzzled by which device to buy for the important people in your life (or for yourself) Suehle suggests giv- ing thought to how you think the device will get used. "For younger people who might not their own needs are, I know just what would get a full Android tablet and point them in the direction of every Web forum on tinkering and development to encour- age them as creators, not just consumers." Finally, Suehle added that, in her opinion the extended warranties stores love to push for pricey gadgets are not usually worth the price. Besides, tech- nology is always improving, and you'll likely be ready to upgrade your device when it breaks, anyway.
