Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans are finally getting the 'Thank You' they deserve BY REBEKAH SANDERLIN Veterans these days are welcomed home to ap- plauding crowds and yellow ribbon car magnets, just as veterans in World Wars I and II were warmly embraced when they returned from fight- ing. But most Vietnam veterans were never given the hero's welcome they deserved — until now. For 10 days in November, the city of Fayetteville is inviting every Vietnam War veteran to come here for Heroes Home- coming, a celebration of their service. For some, it may be the first time anyone has ever told them 'thank you'. "There is no other city in the country tied more closely to the Vietnam War and that entire period of our country's history," said Fayetteville Mayor Tony Chavonne. "We hope this honor will result in more Vietnam vets attending the wonderful events taking place in Fayetteville leading up to Veterans Day." More than 60 events are scheduled to take place, some large and some small, but all are free for Vietnam veterans to attend, they need only to pre-register online at www.heroe- shomecoming.com to get free admission to the ticketed events. That said, most of the events are totally free for everyone to attend, beginning with a kickoff ceremony in the NC Veterans' Park on November 4 and ending with a church service at the Main Post Chapel on November 13. In between, there will be special exhibits all over town, a performance by country music star Darius Rucker, performances of the Broadway musical "Miss Saigon", a USO show, screenings of movies about the Vietnam War, and an appearance from Adrian Cronauer, the inspiration behind the movie "Good Morning Vietnam" and the voice of the Vietnam War for many veterans. All gave some, some gave all — and all deserve thanks for their sacrifices and service to our nation. Veteran or not, eve- ryone is invited to attend the events and tell these warriors how thankful we are for their service. Some of the major events occurring are listed on the following page.
