Catch them if you can At the Rainbow Room, local high school students will be making a candy- covered history of their own as they transform Cumberland County historic sites, homes and landmarks into delecta- ble gingerbread creations. With eight of ten high schools hous- ing a culinary arts program, Chip Lu- cas, Coordinator of Career and Techni- cal Education for Cumberland County Schools, welcomed the opportunity to take the competition from professional to scholastic. "We've included a history lesson under the radar," Lucas admitted. "We've allowed teams to tour downtown buildings and meet local chefs for recipe suggestions and the down and dirty techniques and tips they'll need to pull it off," he said. Students have been diligently practic- ing with gingerbread batches and plan- ning out their candy and icing details. The contest also posed a perfect inter- disciplinary opportunity, relying on drafting classes to help with sketching and planning, as well as the art students to create banners and signs to showcase on the day. As anyone who's ever watched an epi- sode of "Cake Boss" knows, the process to put together a culinary masterpiece is painstaking. After designing the house on paper, there is a delicate balance be- tween baking the gingerbread, cutting out all of the pieces and turning their vision into a sweet-smelling reality. "Of course, it's not a live show. This isn't TLC," Lucas said. There's no handy video editing to chop up the months of preparation everyone has put into the competition, and teachers are already prepping for the inevitably dubious transportation from their school kitch- ens to the final display.
