T They're supposed to make our lives easier. Slim, lightweight and loaded with functions, tab- let computers and electronic book readers (e-readers) seem like the perfect Christmas pre- sent to give — or to receive. But there's just so many of them, and they're so similar — and similarly compli- cated. What's a shopper to do? CityView turned to a nearby expert for guidance. Raleigh resident Ruth Suehle is senior editor of OpenSource.com and a core contributor to GeekMom.com. Simply put, this woman knows computers. First, Suehle says, it's important to understand the differences between full- featured tablet computers — such as the iPad — and e-readers, like the Kindle or the Nook. "They aren't meant for the same thing, and if you want one and buy the other, you'll be disappointed," Sue- hle said. She said that in the tablet category, where prices range from about $300 to $800, there is a plethora of Android operating system tablet computers. It's somewhere between an e-reader and a tablet computer, with more functions (such as the ability to watch movies use some Android apps) than a simple e-reader, but fewer capabilities than a tablet computer. "The original Kindle is an amazing e-reader," Suehle said. "It's more fairly compared with other e-readers, like the Barnes and Noble Nook. The e-ink technology is really appealing. I didn't even think I had an eyestrain problem reading on screen, since I do it all the time. But now that I have the option, I would far rather read on my Kindle than through the Kindle app on any other de- Anglo American Porsche Design Michael Kors Kate Spade Hugo Boss Carrera Fendi Gucci Tom Ford Ronit Furst Casanova Christian Dior Kazuo Kawasaki & other fine eyewear 910.221.0191 www.metrospecs.us 201 S.McPherson Church Rd Suite 105 in McPherson Square Make this Holiday Season Your Time to Shine!
