This past week, it all came to fruition. And possibly at the right time too. The Cavaliers downed Burns in overtime early last week, but it was the game against Shelby that signifi ed a fast paced turnaround. Calvin Camp (29 points, 7 assists) was just a bulldog and battled for rebounds, stripped the ball away after a missed free throw and drove the lane on a mission all night in a 92-82 victory over Shelby last Friday. Trey Dawkins posted 31 after fed by Camp on a number of occasions and Tyrese Carson had 19 in the win. "It's a thrill for me as a coach that the kids are trying to execute what I want us to do," East Rutherford Basketball Coach Brad Levine said. "We played well together tonight and they are starting to realize the importance of Monday, Wednesday and Thursday in how we practice." R-S Central split this past week's games. They lost another heart-breaker 66-62 to Burns and then took care of Chase 77-53. Both Central and East Rutherford should at least get wild card spots, just how good of a spot they get depends on how many more wins they notch in the next four games. Chase will go to Kings Mountain on Friday 2/6 and then host East Burke 2/10. Ladies R-S Central continues to impress, sweeping both games easily this past week. Victories of 38 points and 24 help, but it will get tougher this week. They go to East Burke on 2/6 and then host East Rutherford 2/10. If R-S Central beats East Burke's girls, that should give them the No.1 seed among the 2A SMAC teams for the playoffs. The difference could be a 7 seed or a 23 seed. That's how big this week is for the Lady Hilltoppers. East Rutherford nipped Burns last week, but lost another close game themselves against Shelby. The Lady Cavs wild card hopes have probably been dashed unless they win four in a row and Draughn loses that many in a row to end the season. Super Bowl What a great game that turned out to be? There isn't a better catch that you will see with Jermaine Kearse's juggling act at the end for Seattle. Many thought that was the winning play of the game, which set the Seahawks up fi rst and goal inside the fi ve. Marshawn Lynch gets four yards on the next play and then they elect Russell Wilson to throw from the one! Really! You have three chances to punch it in and it ends up being an interception. It was a tough interception by Malcolm Butler, but Pete Carroll gets most of the blame for this loss on one decision. What was more impressive is that New England came back 10 points in the fi nal quarter. Scoring 14 on Seattle in a game is solid, but scoring 14 in a quarter just doesn't happen on the Seahawks defense. NCAA basketball Duke-Virginia. Virginia doesn't lose at home. Normally, a team can stay with them for a half and then they turn up volume in the second half. It went they way against Duke this past Saturday night. However, Duke who trailed by 11 with 10 minutes to go, hits six of their last eight 3's of the game to stunned the Cavs. Maybe the dismissal of Rasheed Sulaimon wasn't such a bad idea after all for Duke. UNC -Lousiville. Honestly, I thought Carolina had been playing better than Louisville lately. In the fi rst half of Saturday's contest, you could tell it. However, they let Louisville off the hook and Carolina's 11-point lead dwindle's to a tie at the end, forcing overtime. It was all Cards in overtime. No need to panic for either of the four teams mentioned. They all have fi ve losses or less and ranked in the top 15. 200 W. The temps aren't too bad for Winter either, so it makes you wonder if we'll even get any snow this Winter? So far the pattern is cold air chasing the moisture, and that looks like it will continue for a couple more weeks at least. So will things work out for snow this year? Time is running out quickly.
