ByHamzaHendawiand Sarah El Deeb The Associated Press CAIRO The two sons of ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak were re- leased from prison Mon- day, nearly four years af- ter they were first arrested along with their father, au- thorities said. Security officials said the pair, wealthy businessman Alaa and Mubarak's one- time heir apparent Gamal, walked free from Torah Prison in a southern Cairo suburb shortly after day- break and headed to their respective homes in the capital's upscale Heliopo- lis suburb. Interior Minister Mo- hammed Ibrahim, who is in charge of police and prisons, confirmed the re- lease of the two, but would not say when they walked free. There has been intense speculation among activists in Cairo that they may actu- ally have been secretly freed over the weekend. The two, along with their father, still face a re- trial on corruption charges, for which a date has yet to be set. Separately, the two sons also face trial on in- sider trading charges. Hear- ings resume in March. They had been acquitted of other charges. Mubarak, 86 and ailing, stepped down in February 2011 in the face of a popu- lar uprising. He and his two sons were arrested in April that year. Mubarak remains at a military hospital in a southern Cairo suburb al- though there are no longer any legal grounds for his de- tention. The security officials spoke on condition of ano- nymity as they weren't au- thorized to speak to jour- nalists. The release of the two had been expected since a Cairo court ordered their release on bail Thursday. The Mubarak sons were sentenced to four years in prison on charges of us- ing state funds to renovate family residencies. Their fa- ther got three years in the case. The sentences were overturned earlier this month. Mubarak was sentenced to life in prison in 2012 for failing to prevent the kill- ing of some 900 protesters during the 18-day uprising against his rule. That ver- dict also was overturned on appeal. He was retried but the case was dismissed last month on a technicality. Mubarak's sons walked free a day after deadly clashes between anti-gov- ernment protesters and po- lice marked the fourth anni- versary of the uprising that ended their father's 29-year rule. That violence Sunday left at least 23 people dead, including three men au- thorities said died planting bombs and three police of- ficers, and wounded 97, the Health Ministry reported. The brothers, particu- larly Gamal, are viewed by many Egyptians as among the pillars of an authoritar- ian and corrupt administra- tion that struck an alliance with mega-wealthy busi- nessmen at the expense of the nation's poor and disad- vantaged. Mubarak was widely be- lieved to have been groom- ing Gamal to succeed him. The two consistently denied that, but the perceived suc- cession plan, along with corruption, police brutality and poverty, were among the main engines of the 2011 uprising. The release of the two sons could spark further protests and would cer- tainly fuel the notion among the secular and liberal ac- tivists behind the 2011 up- rising that the Mubarak re- gime has been making a comeback since President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi, a gen- eral-turned-politician, took office in June. The shooting deaths of two female protesters over the weekend have stoked renewed anger over the po- lice's use of excessive force. The death of one of the two, 32-year-old Shaimaa el-Sa- bagh, was captured on sev- eral videos that, activists and witnesses claim, point to the police as the perpe- trators. Home Internet con- nections are banned for all but a handful of Cu- bans, and the government charges nearly a quarter of a month's salary for an hour online in government- run hotels and Internet cen- ters. As a result, most peo- ple live offline, complaining about lack of access to in- formation and contact with friends and family abroad. A small minority have covertly engineered a partial solution by pool- ing funds to create a pri- vate network of more than 9,000 computers with small, inexpensive but powerful hidden Wi- Fi antennas and Ethernet cables strung over streets and rooftops spanning the entire city. Disconnected from the real Internet, the network is limited, local and built with equipment commercially available around the world, with no help from any outside gov- ernment, organizers say. Hundreds are online at any moment pretending to be orcs or U.S. soldiers in multiplayer online games such as "World of War- craft" or "Call of Duty." They trade jokes and pho- tos in chat rooms and orga- nize events like house par- ties or trips to the beach. "We really need Internet because there's so much in- formation online, but at least this satisfies you a little bit because you feel like, 'I'm connected with a bunch of people, talk- ing to them, sharing files," said Rafael Antonio Broche Moreno, a 22-year-old elec- trical engineer who helped build the network known as SNet, short for streetnet. Cuban youth build computer network despite Wi-Fi ban COMMUNICATIONS By Jorge Sainz The Associated Press MADRID A Greek F-16 fighter jet crashed into other aircraft on the ground dur- ing NATO training in south- eastern Spain Monday, kill- ing at least 10 French and Greek military personnel, Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said. Another 21 people were injured in the incident at the Los Llanos base, which sent flames and a plume of black smoke billowing into the air, the Spanish Defense Minis- try said in a statement. Rajoy told Spain's Te- lecinco news program in an interview Monday night that eight of the dead were French and two were Greek. Eleven of the injured were Italian and 10 were French, he said. Five of those hurt suf- fered severe burns and were transported to a Ma- drid hospital for treatment, and the rest were undergo- ing treatment in the city of Albacete near the base, the Defense Ministry said. The French Defense Min- istry said five from the coun- try were seriously injured. French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian will head to the scene Tuesday. The two-seat jet was tak- ing off but lost thrust and crashed into an area of the base where other aircraft involved in the NATO exer- cise were parked, the Span- ish Defense Ministry said. At least five jets were dam- aged and a statement from Italy's defense ministry said "numerous" helicop- ters were damaged. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called the crash "a tragedy that affects the whole NATO family." The Spanish ministry said the jet that crashed was taking part in a NATO training exercise called the Tactical Leadership Pro- gram. According to a U.S. Air Force website, TLP was formed in 1978 by NATO's Central Region air forces to advance their tactical capa- bilities and produce tactics, techniques and procedures that improve multi-national tactical air operations.
