January 21, 2015 www.DesertMessenger.com 45 Rainbow Acres Tournament #4 By Linda Taylor Rainbow Acres Tourney #5 Results We couldn't have asked for a more perfect day to play golf. We had 24 dedicated folks come out. The rocks came back to haunt most of us as we made our way around the course shooting somewhat higher than normal scores. That didn't keep us from having a great time. It is always competitive golf, and today was no exception to the rule. We had 3 teams tie today for first place shooting identical scores of 39 which is 17 under par. Our win- ninng teams were Ben Campbell & Bud Key, Russ Leininger & Larry Jensen, and Kent Limb & Jerry Taylor. Fourth place with a score of 40 was the team of Brian Hop- kins & Cletus Winkler. They were closely followed by the team of Brad Romaine & Kit Wilkins who shot a 41. Men's closest to the hole #8 was won by Jerry Taylor. Clos- est to the hole on #9 was Cletus Winkler with a hole in one. Holes in one on #1 were made by Bud Key and Jerry Taylor. Long drive on #13 for men was Russ Leini- nger and for the women was Debi Jensen. The final tournament of the year for Rainbow Acres will be held at 9:00 on Thursday, Febru- ary 19th. Also, it is not too early to be thinking about a partner for the Good Guys/Gals & Bad Guys/Gals tournament to be played the first part of March. The date will be an- nounced later. Hope to see you on the links! Jim was instructed to not use his patrol radio but use a public phone booth to call the Sheriff's office for instructions. While standing in the booth with his back to the road, the robbers drove up, got out, and quickly removed Jim's gun out of its holster. The robbers then ordered him to tear out the patrol radio. As Jim was doing as instructed High- way Patrolman Jim Leach pulled up to see why two men were standing beside Deputy Mitchell's sheriff's car, where- upon the robbers used Mitchell's gun to relieve Patrolman Leach of his gun be- fore they sped off. During their hot pur- suit, the Yuma deputies had called in all available law enforcement to assist in apprehending the armed and danger- ous robbers. In the twilight of the next morning, Mitchell spotted the lights on in a home occupied by an elderly couple on Washington Boulevard. Suspicious, INN FROM PAGE 23 he called his counterparts who joined in apprehending the two robbers. Later, Jim's folks sold the garage and moved up to Winslow. The Varala fam- ily made the old Adobe Inn their home until late one night it caught fire and burn to the ground. Driving past the smoldering ruins I thought of Elmer Knott and that wonderful bowl of apri- cot cobber he had served our family when we moved to Quartzsite. Sadly, another of Quartzsite's important land- marks is but a memory. Yuma Sherrif
