Kimo's had a lanai area downstairs for lunch and cocktails, but the kitchen was upstairs (up 21 stairs, as I recall.) We did somewhere around 200 lunches a day. My primary job was that of "food runner." I took the orders to the kitch- en, brought the lunches downstairs to the waitresses and cleared all the dishes and silverware back up to the kitchen. I started at 9:00 a.m. and I fi nished at 5:00 p.m., all the while, running up and down those stairs. An amazing thing happened. I grew. In fact, I became so fi t that I let myself get talked into running the mountain- ous Iao Valley 10K Race on the Kihei side of the island. My training regimen was to cease imbibing for seven days prior to the race, which was brutal. Still, I fi nished in 51:51. With my cronies at the fi nish line sporting a cooler of spir- its, I retired from racing on the spot. I did buy a used treadmill many years back. It holds a prominent place in the garage. I am pretty sure it is still plugged in. Since that time, with no one else pay- ing me an hourly wage to stay in shape, I have mostly reverted back to a Newto- nian Law of Motion, that being "an ob- ject remaining at rest." I love the feel of that Under Armour underwear with the really long legs that grip you to the top of the knee so that if I ever did leg li s in public, I would not be obscene.
