Quartzsite - Master Carver Richard
"Dick" Friesen will teach a one day
class offered by Arizona Western Col-
lege (AWC) covering all of the steps
necessary to produce a fi rst carving
plus information on where to go next
with the art. Friesen has been carving
and teaching for almost twenty years
throughout the western United States-
This is a unique opportunity. There
aren't very many classes offered on this
art and not many Master Carvers teach-
ing this subject.
Gemstone carving is an old art; the
Chinese were doing it 5000 years ago
but it is no longer commonly done to-
day. That is really unfortunate, because
we now have very effi cient tools avail-
able to do it.
Beginner's Class will be held at the
Quartzsite Learning Center, 695 N.
Kofa Ave. on January 24th, from 9am
- 4pm with 1 hour lunch break. Cost is
$60 + $5 for supplies.
AWC offers sev-
eral classes that are under appreciated
and Winter Visitors should really look
