Pliocene Epoch, 5.3 to 2.5 million years ago, rich in magnesium, with exceptionally high capacity for sequestration of atmospheric CO2. In other words, the porous surface of the lava traps carbon dioxide from the air, creating carbon-rich rocks. It is the excess carbon and exceptionally high amounts of magnesium in these sedi- ments that eroded out of the of the Bouse Formation layers which cause the soft black, browns, and greys characteristic of the petrifi ed wood found in this area. In eastern Arizona, the Holbrook/Winslow area is a great place to stop for a few days and explore. Amazing examples of Rainbow Petrifi ed Wood can be seen at Petrifi ed Forest National Park. While collecting petrifi ed wood is illegal within the boundaries of the Park, there are several locations around Winslow and Hol- brook where collecting is legal and open to the public. Here in western Arizona, Petrifi ed Ironwood is found in the Alluvial Plains along the Colorado River, and can be collected at several sites near Ehrenberg. To purchase petrifi ed wood, or for more information and maps to petrifi ed wood collecting areas come to RocksInMyHead, A37 Rice Ranch, in Quartzsite. We have a nice selection of Rainbow Petrifi ed Wood and several beautiful specimens of Petrifi ed Ironwood as well as books, maps, tools and more. We are open 7 days a week from 10 to 5, November through April. The phone number is 605- 376-8754 and you can visit us online at RocksInMyHead.com.
