OUR 22 nd YEAR • ISSUE NO. 51 • DECEMBER 18, 2014 RutherfordWeekly.com 828-248-1408 FREE FREE YOUR COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER YOUR COMMUNITY NEWSPAPER Girl Scouts in Troop 02280 of Ellenboro are living out the Girl Scout Promise this holiday season by giving to others. The Scouts, who are working on their financial literacy badge, have adopted a family to help this Christmas. "Our girls participated in the Girl Scout Fall Product Sale and sold $243 worth of nuts, candies and magazines," said Jessica Beheler, leader of the Daisy/Brownie Troop. "We discussed with the girls what we should do with our 15 percent of the proceeds prior to the sale, and emphasized that part of the money could be used for a fun activity for the troop and the other part should be set aside for a service project." That percentage, combined with a $50 community donation, added up to $150 for the girls to spend on items for the family. To fulfill the requirements of the badge, the girls had to understand the difference between wants and needs and how to budget. "The girls divided up by groups to shop, with a group looking for toys, one for toiletries, etc.," said Tanya Brookman, a co-leader of the Troop. "They had to look at their budget and comparison shop between store brand and name brand." "We learned how much money we had, and we had to know if we had enough to buy things," said A.J. Ledbetter, a Brownie member of the Troop. "I feel happy that we've helped someone else." The service project has served as a life lesson, said Betty Curry, who is a leader in the Troop. "It gives them skills for later in life and has taught them to respect money," she said. The remainder of the proceeds from the Fall Sale will be used for a fun outing for the Troop to the Ooh La La Kidz Spa.
