There is a group of retired military veterans and honorably discharged veterans bound togeth- er with the same common bond. They are the Special Military Active Retired Travel Club (S*M*A*R*T). Today, with years of honorable service behind them, their mission is simple---"Enjoy Life". Some have homes and travel with their local chapters to surround- ing points of interest, often on a monthly basis. Others live in their RVs fulltime. Their meetings are called Mus- ters. Most last from three to fi ve days and usually include a tour of nearby attractions. Often there are special projects the chapter may undertake, fun and games is always on tab, meals are often catered, pot luck or shared at a lo- cal establishment. More important is the camaraderie shared through- out the muster. Greeting old bud- dies and sharing fond memories, meeting new friends who have similar experiences makes this group so special. Chapters are often involved in community action Projects helping their communities, military instal- lations and veterans groups. Some of the special project fall in line with "Veterans Helping Veterans" theme. Visiting the lo- cal veterans home at Christmas, building picnic table and ramps for the handicap, cleaning up and contributing to the improvement of local military installation camping facilities called FAMCAMPS. and working to help preserve and re- store historical forts and facilities. Members patriotism is displayed annually by participation in Memo- rial Day, Armed Forces Day, Flag Day, July 4th celebrations and Veterans Day. SMART Members are often involved in hometown events such as greeting present day veterans as they return home from a tour of combat duty abroad. SMART has national offi cers which include a President and two Vice Presidents, and nine Regional Directors with local chapters in the states under their supervision. An Executive Manager and an as- sistant are located at the SMART Headquarters in Pensacola, FL. And provides nationwide coordina- tion and communication for the 49 chapters and 1400 members. 2 Communication is maintained throughout the year via a by-month- ly magazine (The Traveler) and a Website (smartrving.org). These publications offer a link to many chapter websites, with current in- formation regarding club activities, members and planned musters. Caravanning across America and abroad offers a unique aspect of SMART. Experienced members called Wagon masters , volunteer to lead caravans to many excit- ing places throughout the United States and Canada. Special trips to New Zealand/Australia, Mexico and other points of interest annu- ally. SMART boasts the best prices in the RV travel industry. Each year the club gathers in mass with a Regional Musters in the Spring and a National muster in the fall. These muster bring the chapters together for a spe- cial bonding and rekindling of friendships.
