We started mulling over some past events going back fi ve or more years ago. We hit on it- the CASI Chili Cook-Off the Quartzsite Chamber used to do, and did it so well. All of us who were there then loved it. There was so much going on and so much great chili (and Salsa.) I sat down with Ce and Tony Carnevale as well as Joanne Winer a few months ago and they were thrilled that we were bringing it back. Well, let's fi rst thank right now their unselfi sh generosity in telling me all about their history and doings with these wonderful, fun Chili Cook-Offs. We want to make sure we do it right for our townspeople and visitors and that they enjoy the fun competition as it has in the past. So here we go. We became members of CASI, the Chili Appreciation Society International last year. Now we are starting the plans for one big, busy, fun day. Saturday, February 28, 2015 will be the new annual CASI-sanctioned Chili Cook-Off along with a People's Choice Chili & Salsa competition. And, yes, it will be at Tyson Wells as it had in the past, and thanks to Kym Scott who always helps the non-profi ts in town in any way he can. This all means that there will be a chili competition by members of CASI to earn points leading up to their National Championship in Terlingua, Texas. This part of the Chili Cook-Off means no beans, pure chili with meat. We will have no less than 15 contestants from CASI. The judges will be picked from our locals attending. When the judging fi nishes and the points and trophies are done, we go into the 2nd phase: our own People's Choice for the best 1st, 2nd, 3rd place for chili (and, yes, with beans if you wish) and also three places for a salsa competition. This will be for some good money prizes for the winners. If we get a decent amount of entrants, and I believe we will, then the money purse grows and we will add on two Honorable Mentions as well. In the following editions of the Desert Messenger, and thank you, Rain, the biggest Quartzsite cheerleader of them all, we will have additional information on the events throughout the day of this event whether you want to "Cook and Compete…or Just want to…Eat!" The information, rules, entrant forms, etc , will be on our Facebook page, go and put "Quartzsite Rotary Chili Cook-off" into the search bar. We will be giving updates on the many events, raffl es, and more going on throughout the day. Also starting this week, Quartzsite Rotary will be selling tickets for later that afternoon (same Saturday) for a Vegas-style Tribute Show called "The Legends of Country Music", starting at 4:30PM. Don't miss this opportu- nity to re-live memories from a period in country music history when songs were written from the soul and sung from the heart. Attending this show is like walking through the Country Mu- sic Hall of Fame! Go to your Facebook and put "Quartzsite Rotary's Legends of Country Music Show" into the search bar. It will have all the updates! More information to come in the near future. If you have any questions in the mean- time, please call 927-6111, or email: quartzsite_rotary@nethere.com.
