16 UCW DECEMBER 17-23, 2014 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Hymns. Carols. Songs about snow. They become more like background noise in a blur of activ- ity than a joy sometimes, don't they? As we inch ever closer to Christmas Day, I want to encourage you to slow down. Take a deep breath, and enjoy the true wonder of the season. With all the gift buying and program attending we do during the winter holidays, it's easy to lose track of what we're actually celebrating. As the voice of a Christian radio station, I have to stick to the winter holiday I am most familiar with, which is Christmas. No, I don't believe Jesus was actually born on Dec. 25 or that wise men showed up on that exact evening, but I do believe his birth is worth celebrating. Jesus — Emmanuel — was the Messiah promised and foretold for centuries among the Jewish people. While much of what happened in the days before he was born can be explained or reasoned away, the circumstances surrounding the announcement of his birth are nothing short of miraculous. There were plenty of casual bystanders who suddenly found themselves with starring roles in a play they had no idea was even taking place. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger." Luke 2:8- 12 (NIV) It's much the same today. There are people rushing here and there, parties are being hosted, and people like you and me are getting up and heading out to work each day. Yet all around us, there's this miracle unfolding. You see, the same Messiah who appeared well over 2,000 years ago is still making things new. He is still redeeming people who feel like all is lost, and giving hope to all who seek and find him. And just like that night, you don't have to do anything or be anyone special to meet him personally. Jesus is just as accessible in 2014 as he was the day his birth was announced to those shepherds on the hillside. So as you feel the sudden grip of fear that you forgot to go there, do this, or buy that, remind yourself that this is a season of joy. It's a time to celebrate a new or renewed connection with all that is good in this world. Embrace the hope the Christmas season offers, and share it with others.
