here is no doubt that the things in this world with last- ing value were all built on firm foundations.
Among Fayetteville's time-tested vir-
tues is a rich community of faith. As you look around the city, there are a plethora of churches, temples, ministries, fellowships and worship centers. The faith community here provides many dynamic avenues for people to express worship to God. At the center of our city's early faith community was Henry Evans, a black man. In 1796 he built the first church in the city and it was used by both blacks and whites. His
efforts are memorialized today in Evans Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church and his body lies entombed beneath the chan- cel of the church. Father Henry Evans and the Evans
Metropolitan A.M.E. Zion Church have made such a remarkable impact, spiritually and structurally, in this region and in the nation that on July 7, 1983 the church was listed in the National Register of Historic Places and became a local landmark in the City of Fayetteville on February 24, 2002.
