us. Methodist College (now Methodist University) offered the public a chance to enjoy classical music with performances by the North Carolina Symphony in Reeves Auditorium. Perhaps the greatest treasure I discov- ered was the people of Fayetteville. Be- cause we are the home of Fort Bragg, our town is a unique blend of the old South and modern America, a combination which offers us a richly diverse population. I have met people from nearly every state in the Union and from many different coun- tries. Where else could I have become ac- quainted with a man who was hand-picked by President Kennedy to be one of the original members of Special Forces and at the same time become good friends with a woman who spent several summers at Wil- liam Faulkner's house as the guest of his daughter Jill? In what other city could I find such a variety of companions? Twenty-eight years later, I have become one of Fayetteville's most ardent support- ers. Many things have changed since 1983 (including the birth of a second daughter, Fayetteville has a flourishing downtown with an eclectic array of restaurants and shops. Kathleen, in 1986), but I think that most of these changes have only made our city better than before. We have built many new museums, parks, schools, and libraries. We have a flourishing downtown with an eclec- tic array of restaurants and shops. We have a strong economy and one of the most sta- ble real estate markets in the country. We have A Dickens Holiday, the International Folk Festival, and the Dogwood Festival. We have the Cumberland Oratorio Singers and the Fayetteville Symphony, both offer- ing us first-rate musical experiences. We have one of the largest family-owned daily newspapers in America. Now whenever I hear people criticize Fayetteville I invite them to visit us. I know that if they come they will see a city that I, once Fayetteville's most reluctant citizen, am proud to call home.
