editors' corner Everyday Indulgences I Rebekah Sanderlin, senior editor M n this issue we asked some well known locals to tell us about their "everyday indul- gences" (page 36), the little things that make their lives a little sweeter and their days smoother. In a down economy, these little things take on even greater significance. Maybe we can't all jet off to Hawaii for a two-week vacation, but most of us can afford to buy a fresh pineapple at the grocery store or, as one responder mentioned, a spray tan to keep our skin's summer glow a bit longer. I'm a big fan of everyday indulgences. I regularly splurge on strong coffee, good qual- ity writing pens and fresh produce. I've never met a dessert I didn't like and am happy to spend extra time in the gym to burn off a rich slice of cheesecake, a flaky piece of baklava or an extra glass of red wine. Clipping coupons and watching for sales doesn't feel like a sacrifice when I allow myself a few little luxuries along the way. The very word indulgence seems to take on deeper meaning with fall now in the air. Hearty soups and stews with a hunk of crusty bread on the side (see page 20), a new pair of shearling boots (bought on sale during the summer months) just waiting to be worn, the promise of a nap in a hammock now that the weather is pleasant again and, before we know it, egg nog — these are the indulgences now beckoning to me. Happy fall, y'all! y October survival guide of indulgences: Pumpkin spiced lattes, pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin ravioli – you get the picture. Roasted pumpkin seeds (store bought, mine never turn out right), spotting the brightest colored leaves as they turn from green to bright hues on long walks, sweaters, denim, wool socks and boots. Trying new recipes, hearty for fall. Thanks to some of our local chefs for sharing their soup recipes on p.18. Happy Anniversary to CityView! Read more about the history of the magazine on p.22 and thanks to all of our advertisers and readers for making us a success. We love connecting with you on Facebook, at events and hearing your feedback and ideas. Be sure to stop by our table at Fourth Friday this month to say hello. There will be a business card drawing for a free ad for any of our past advertisers. Kelly Twedell, features editor 8 | Anniversary Issue • 2011
