Hawkins '40 entered Chapter Grand February 16. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II for 16 months. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith. Kenneth C. Kappes '48 entered Chapter Grand September 14. He spent most of his career in the flexible packaging business, working in sales and product development. He was awarded several U.S. patents for his unique ideas in the industry. His concept for a food packaging material for space travel was adopted by NASA and is still in use today. He is survived by his wife, Bernadine of Carmel; their four children, Dr. Steven Kappes of Milwaukee, Jeffrey Kappes of Noblesville, Anne Kappes Weber of Reno, and Timothy Kappes of Zionsville; his brother, Philip "Skip" Kappes '45; six grandchildren; and two great- grandchildren. James R. Askren '53 entered Chapter Grand May 27. Jim was president and owner of Askren Memorials, which had been in his family for 75 years. Among his many achievements, Jim was a member of and highly recognized by the American Institute of Commemorative Art. Jim is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Carla; their three children: Susie Stark, Nancy Russell and Pam Marske; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandson. Douglas Hatton '53 entered Chapter Grand November 6. He owned and operated Hatton's Rexall, formerly on the east side of Bloomington Square, ValuePlus Family Pharmacy on North College and Allcares Home Care. He enjoyed being a private airplane pilot and was an avid fisherman. He is survived by his wife, Janet (Edwards) Hatton; his daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Steve Fleenor; his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Barbara Hatton; two grandsons; one stepgrandson; and one great-granddaughter. Michael K. Droll '82 entered Chapter Grand May 25. He was an avid reader, outdoorsman, and little league baseball, football, and basketball coach. He is survived by his two sons, mother, sister, and girlfriend. Alumni News_________________ William R. Sennhauser '57 still works full time but is considering switching to part time starting next year when he turns 80. He lives in Dallas, Texas. David K. Jordan '61 enjoys reflecting on his Phi Delta Theta experience as a past Chapter president. He has many fond memories and writes, "Always proud that I am a Brother!" Indiana Gamma to Begin Annual Scholarship Appeal Help Our Chapter Continue to Thrive A t Homecoming this fall, we celebrated the $1 million milestone and end of our capital campaign, which allowed us to complete important updates and improvements to The Castle. We are grateful for the support of our alumni in accomplishing this goal, which has allowed us to begin planning for the future of Indiana Gamma in the area of scholarships. So please keep the Indiana Gamma scholarship top of mind when you consider your choices for annual charitable giving.
