There is no greater time for people to bind together than at the time of a loved one's passing. It is a sad commentary on how busy our society has become, that oftentimes the only time the whole family unit comes together is at the time of a loved one's death. Nevertheless, family members provide a valuable key to getting through the initial stage of grief. At times, sitting around a living room reminiscing and sharing stories of the deceased has a therapeutic purpose. It may be a hug, or just the sense of "being there" that will help someone through the darkness of a loss. It's always amazing to see how each family member draws a certain amount of strength from each other. At times the family unit may even be extended to include others with an emotional investment. Neighbors, church members, co-workers, hospice volunteers, pastors and family friends often become a temporary part of the family unit. These groups may provide an extra amount of support for the immediate family, especially in the case of a small or displaced family. When a loved one passes, it is important to allow family members to have the ability to interact and form that common goal of getting through their pain together. A writer once said, "Even hundredfold grief is divisible by love". ~Terri Guillemets. We all need the comforting love that is found in a family.
