OUTDOOR TRUTHS I am certain the most thankful peo- ple ought to be those who consider themselves outdoorsmen and outdoor- swomen. We are the folks who get to enjoy riches that go far beyond our abil- ity to pay for. We get to play in the backyard of God. And even though most property is claimed by an individual or entity; it is really all owned by its Creator. His handiwork is seen in every mountain and valley. He fi lls each hollow with animals, plants, and trees, not by chance, but according to His divine purpose. Every creation has its own unique manner that point pass- ersby to its Designer. And if this creation could speak, there is no doubt the fi rst utterance from her lips would be words of praise and thankfulness. If this is true for all other creations, how much more true it ought to be for us – those made in the very image of God. Many who study science are led to believe that we have merely evolved from a lower form of life; that our life is of no more value than any other. They decry therefore that we ought to treat all creation with equal goodness. And while they are right about goodness they have overlooked the fact that good- ness is actually a moral virtue that must come from some- where. Even those who deny God have something in them that cries out for fairness and goodness and tolerance. These are all qualities of the Creator of mankind who, once again, made us in His image. Why can't they embrace hatred or even unfairness? It is because they have within them, as Solomon declared, "Eternity in their hearts." There is a need for mankind to espouse the greater good. Even thieves demand fairness among themselves. All of this points to the existence of God. What has this to do with thankfulness among those who love the outdoors? Outdoorsmen and outdoorswomen have forever been individuals who understand they are uniquely blessed to be the fi rst ones who decipher creation's cryptic message that points us time and time again to its Architect. By By Gary Miller Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ GARY MILLER gary@outdoortruths.org ~ www.outdoortruths.org The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission's Home From The Hunt™ campaign reminds everyone who is hunting during the holiday season to make safety the top priority. "Thanksgiving and Christmas are traditional times for family and friends to go hunting," said Travis Casper, the state hunter education coordinator with the Wildlife Commission. "In the excitement of a holiday hunt, don't overlook the safety aspects. Make it a part of your planning. Stress the importance of everyone being careful." Before the hunt, Casper advised: Get back to basics — review hunter education training and equipment instructions. Know the rules — read applicable requirements, licensing and season information in the Regulations Digest before going afi eld. Inspect all equipment — repair or replace equipment, especially tree stands, before use. "We recommend a full-body safety harness anytime you use a tree stand," Casper said. "Maintain three points of contact when climbing up and down, and never carry anything as you climb." When hunting with a fi rearm, Casper advised: Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. Be certain of your target and what is beyond. Keep your fi nger off the trigger until ready to shoot. A blaze orange cap, hat or outer garment that is visible from all sides must be worn when hunting bear, feral hogs, deer, rabbit, squirrel, grouse, pheasant or quail with a fi rearm. Anyone hunting deer during a deer fi rearms season, regardless of method, must wear blaze orange. Hunters also are required to wear blaze orange while hunting with archery equipment during the black powder and gun seasons, including Sundays.
