Charles said, "That must be it. Our honeybee 'gatherers' had been making off with the oozed booze on the ground, being attracted to one of the ingredients in liquor, sugar." For the rest of the day, we kept an eye on the bee yard. By evening there was little or no change, just a constant low hum from each hive. By morning, all the bees were back in their hives although there was little or no fl ight activity. Bees were not com- ing and going from their hives in their usual pursuit of nectar from the early spring plants that were just beginning to bloom. I joked to Charles that per- haps our honeybee girls were experienc- ing something like a hangover. Charles' sideways glance told me that he didn't think my diagnosis carried much water (or booze). Later Charles went to get the news- paper and came back saying that the usual crowd that hung out on the bench in front of Scott's Store wasn't there. I laughed to myself, "Yep, with all those free drinks up at the Crossroads I'll bet, like our honeybees, they've got a bit of a hangover too."
