Christmas Food Drive challenge Shelves are going bare in food banks and pantries as more market demand for food means the federal government is buying less fruit, vegetables, meat and dairy products to give to needy families. As a result, food banks and pantries nationwide say they are giving out less food, even as record numbers of families turn to them for help. Carol Kelley, Director of Quartzsite Food Bank said the amount of gov- ernment food the pantry receives has dwindled over the past two years. There's been major cutbacks in the program Emergency Food Assistance Program, which the federal govern- ment buys surplus fruit, vegetables and meats to give to food banks. Silly Al's Pizza owners Robbie and Karon Robertson have issued a chal- lenge to local restaurants and busi- nesses during the month December to fi ll the food pantry shelves. Silly Al's has a donation box at the entrance through Dec. 20th to collect cans of food. Customers who donate 2 or more cans of non-perishable foods (no expired or homemade, please) will get $1 off any food item in the restaurant. (1 per customer only.) Karon Robertson said, "Our chal- lenge to other restaurants and busi- nesses, is to join with us and for every 50 cans collected, we'll buy a turkey for a family on Carol's List. We hope to make this an annual Christmas Food Drive."
