The winter season is upon us and bur- glaries in Quartzsite are beginning to rise, particularly in outside storage units with little to no security. The Quartzsite Police Department sug- gests taking the following steps to help prevent you from becoming a victim of Burglary. 1) Know what's in there. Conduct an inventory of all of your valuables and where you've placed them. Be sure to jot down any serial numbers or other iden- tifi ers. Keep this list in a safe place. 2)Use an engraver or permanent marker to scribe your name, phone number, last four of your social securi- ty number, date of birth, or something else that will unmistakably identify the property as yours. This will make it harder for thieves to sell your property and help police return it to you if recov- ered. Make sure to write in a conspicu- ous place, easy to see, because it may deter thieves from taking that item in the fi rst place. If you do not have an en- graver, please contact QPD at 928-927- 4644 and we'll let you borrow ours. Protect yourself from burglaries 3) Take pictures of your valuables and storage area. Having pictures will also help identify your property if recovered. In the unfortunate event of a burglary, a picture of the entire storage area the way you left it will help police compare to post-burglary pictures and have a better idea of what was disturbed or moved and may be able to lift fi nger- prints off of those items. 4) Secure your storage area with a Round Lock. Regular padlocks are too easy to cut off. Ask your property man- ager or a trusted person to check on the condition of your unit and lock regu- larly. 5) Ask for a storage unit that is up front or can be seen easily from a street if one is available. Thieves are more likely to target storage units near the back where they are less likely to be seen. Ask your property manager to place a fence and cameras around the property if it does not already have them. 6) Keep our phone number - 888-818- 4911. Please contact Quartzsite Police if you are a victim of a burglary as soon as you are aware. Even if you are out of the area for the summer, crucial evidence may be lost if you wait until next season.
