At the heart of the whole experience is a chapter house where brothers live, work and grow up together—and our house is really showing its age," John said. "To continue to attract the best young men on campus and to have a facility that is inviting, safe, and conducive to brotherhood doesn't come free. It never did. One hundred years ago our alumni brothers banded together, chipped in and constructed the first purpose-built fraternity house in the country. Now it's our turn." John understands that a commitment to Sigma Chi is not without personal cost. "I have to tell you that making a five-year pledge at the exact same time my son was heading off to college didn't make it any easier! I felt a whole lot better when I talked to Dave Train '84 and Todd Halsted '84, who are very close to the project. The plans are solid, but not over-the-top. The project is extremely well managed, which helped me summon up the courage to part with a chunk of post-tax income," John said. "When I was asked to step up and write a check I just felt an obligation to do my part. It's impossible to build, or rebuild, a chapter house out of current-year revenues. The entire fraternity experience relies on alumni brothers willing to pay for a house they'll never get to live in." John and his wife, Debbie, live in Palo Alto, California, and have two sons. William is a freshman at Chapman University and Thomas is a high school sophomore. John enjoys fly fishing, snowboarding and bird hunting with his sons. You can contact him at john.c.crouch@mac.com.
