Visions Violets Beta Sigma Chapter of Sigma Kappa Sorority at Purdue University • Fall 2014 of Sigma Kappa Continues to Inspire Every Day A Note from Your House Corporation President he collegians, Advisory and House Corporation boards, Parent's Club, and our alumnae are coming together now more than ever before. We are proud of our accomplishments over the summer. The House Corporation completed installation of new formal room décor and the Parent's Club provided new furnishings for the north patio and our roof sundeck. To enhance our communications to you, we now have an active Beta Sigma alumnae page on Facebook (SKBetaSigmas) with over 525 friends and growing, in addition to our biannual alumnae newsletter. It's amazing what we can accomplish when we all work together to achieve our common goals. The Corporation recently installed an inspirational quote on the landing of the grand staircase wall from Walt Whitman's 1892 poem O' Me, O' Life. This poem inspired me many years ago as a collegian, once again in 1989 with the release of the movie Dead Poets Society, and this year with Apple's recent commercials inquiring, "What will your verse be?" All of us are unique and have equal opportunities to make the world a better place. Sigma Kappa and my Sigma sisters made a positive impact on my life as a young woman and continue to do so. I look forward to Purdue's Homecoming each year to reconnect with my best friends who have continued to encourage, console, and humor each other the past 38 years. Unable to donate monetary contributions in the past, I opted to donate my time, knowledge, and wisdom to Beta Sigma through service on the Corporation, as have many others before me. Our house continues to be one of the best on Purdue's campus through diligent efforts of the collegians and alumnae. Please help our ongoing improvements through your donations of time or money for scholarships or housing improvements. Interested in joining or assisting the Advisory Board, House Corporation, or Parent's Club? Do you have ideas but limited time or funds? Can you donate in-kind services or materials? Please reach out to me to discover the numerous, simple ways you may assist. I close with the excerpt from 1989's Dead Poets Society: The human race is filled with passion…and medicine, law, business, engineering are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, family, romance, love…these are what we stay alive for. "O' me, O' life of the question of these recurring. Of the endless trains of the faithless. Of cities filled with the foolish. What good amid these, O' me, O' life?" Answer: "That you are here. That life exists and identity. That the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse." What will your verse be? Elaine Kull Liley '50 passed away June 19, 2014, at the age of 84 from undiagnosed colon cancer. She was an incredible cook, great hostess, and dancer as many collegians who knew her can attest watching Elaine and her husband, Peter, dance the night away at many of our formals. Elaine served on the Beta Sigma House Corporation/Advisory Board (it was combined back then) for 50 years, leading it for 40. She masterminded an addition that doubled the physical size of our house, making it one of the largest sorority houses in the nation at the time, and managed a multi-million-dollar budget, overseeing many renovations and enhancements during her tenure. Our house would not be what it is today without Elaine. As House Corporation president, I truly don't know how she Beta Sigma Honors Loyal Alumna Elaine Kull Liley '50 T (Continued on page 2) 8 8
