62 | Food & Wine • 2009 Each year the Food Bank rescues from grocers over 5,000,000 pounds of nutritious food (canned goods, fruits and vegetables, meats, bread, dry packaged foods, etc.) that would have otherwise been disposed of. In addition, the Food Bank also receives non-food donations such as bikes, furniture, and clothing. OCTOBER 18 FAYETTEVILLE CROP WALK (25% OF PROCEEDS GO TO FOOD BANK) OCTOBER 28 - DECEMBER 6 HARVEST FEAST FOOD DRIVE (HARRIS TEETER) OCTOBER - DECEMBER 31 LOWE'S FOODS FOOD DRIVE NOVEMBER 1- DECEMBER 5 STUDENTS AGAINST HUNGER NOVEMBER 19 - DECEMBER 9 HEART OF CAROLINA FOOD DRIVE WITH ABC 11 AND THE FOOD BANK OF CENTRAL/EASTERN NORTH CAROLINA Up c om i n g Eve n t s A visit to the Second Harvest Food Bank in eastern Fayetteville is a true eye-opener. It is difficult to imagine the need until you walk into the food bank's giant freezer or see the rows of warehouse shelves waiting for food. The charity depends on donations to fill those shelves and feed the hungry in southeastern North Carolina. And the need is more urgent than ever. In hard times, workers say, families are forced to make a choice between food and rent. But you can help. Check out the Upcoming Events for ways to do your part.
