4 THE IRIS T he men of Epsilon Mu are off to a great start this fall. We made sig- nificant changes in academics; the pledge process is improved; athletic teams are exceeding expectations; philanthropy and community service have seen significant increases; and the brotherhood is grow- ing. We are experiencing tremendous improvements within the structure of our organization. We have many scheduled events that will prove to make for a busy and productive semester for the brothers. ACADEMICS Because the spring semester did not meet academic expectations for Epsilon Mu, we have made positive academic perfor- mance and the inclusion of the recent aca- demic teams program a priority. Brothers who fail to maintain the chapter's mini- mum GPA face strict guidelines to con- tinue membership. With active enforce- ment and constant monitoring, members will be more motivated to succeed. Aca- demics Chairman Austin Prather '16 is leading the process, and I know he will successfully lead our chapter's academi- cally focused challenge. PHILANTHROPY At the end of the spring semester, the chapter raised $2,300 for the Wounded Warrior Project. This fall we held our 42nd annual Watermelon Bust and raised more than $20,000! Also, this fall we have been the main contact for valet park- ing throughout the Muncie community, raising nearly $500 for JDRF. "Guys are working hard this semester. I found a lot of options for them to choose from to find time in their schedules to give back to the community. It's likely that we will rank first in service hours on campus this se- mester," Community Service Chairman Dakota Bowser '17 shared. MEMBERSHIP Led by Recruitment Chairman Kev- in Kelly '16, we have recruited and initiated 15 qualified men. Conrad Ja- cobs '09 and Scott Wise '96 in particular deserve a thank-you for their support dur- ing the process. I believe that the coordi- nation between alumni and undergradu- ates has undoubtedly been a key factor in the fall's successful pledge campaign. Joe Hejl '15 has made significant chang- es to the pledge process, one in particular that we believe will change the academic culture among new members. He has al- tered study table hours to the early morn- ing. We believe that this will promote new members to get a good night's rest instead of staying up late and forming poor study habits. INTRAMURALS Continuing from the spring semester, Delts are dominating intramural sports. This fall, with the implementation of a new bill pay system, we have the funds to participate in almost everything the recreation department has to offer. We are undefeated in all major sports includ- ing softball, soccer, and flag football. We have also won championships in ping pong and 4-versus-4 sand volleyball. Led by Sport Chairman Daniel Ullrich '16, we are on track to be number one in ath- letics this year. I would like to thank all of the alumni and parents who have made my time as presi- dent of Epsilon Mu Chapter enjoyable. I would like to extend a special thank-you to David Frye '04, John Knox '78, Jeff Hern '92, Dan Hockney '65, and all of the alumni advising team who work dili- gently to push our chapter to become the number one organization on campus.
