8 NOVEMBER 19-25, 2014 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Cape Fear Valley Health will kick off the holiday season with its annual Light of Life Tree Lighting ceremony on Monday, Dec. 1. The ceremony begins at 5 p.m., with opening remarks in front of Cape Fear Valley Cancer Treatment & CyberKnife Center. The lighting will follow at 5:20 p.m. This year's tree lighting marks the event's 31st year. Sponsor lights placed on the ceremonial Grand Magnolia tree are hung to honor or memorialize loved ones or caregivers at Cape Fear Valley Health. Lights are $25 per year or $250 for a lifetime. Light of Life is a Grateful Patients and Families Program, which allows the public to express appreciation for care received at Cape Fear Valley. Money raised is reinvested to help the health system buy new healing technology. The Public Works Commission of the city of Fayetteville donated more than 1,000 decorative Energy Star® LED lights to hang on the Light of Life ceremonial tree. The wreath at Highsmith-Rainey Specialty Hospital in downtown Fayetteville will also feature LED lights provided by PWC. Energy Star® means products meet strict EPA energy efficiency standards. Saving energy not only saves money, but also protects the environment by reducing greenhouse emissions in the fight against climate change. "We're honored to donate LED seasonal lighting to the Cape Fear Valley Health Foundation," said Angie Vurnakes, marketing manager for PWC Customer Programs. "Not only are we creating awareness for energy consumption, but also reminding those who see the lights that hope always shines bright for those who pass through the doors of our local hospitals." Arts Council Grant Benefits FSU Fine Arts Series The Department of Performing and Fine Arts at Fayetteville State University announced that they have received funding from the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County to support its 2014-2015 Fine Arts Series. The Fine Arts Series brings artists from various disciplines in the fine and performing arts to FSU for the benefit of the community. The series also includes educational (K-12) and community outreach activities designed to engage and build audiences for the fine and performing arts. The Fine Arts Series is unique because it is the only comprehensive arts series in the city that features gallery exhibits, drama, music and dance events that are free or low cost in order to make the performing and fine arts available to everyone. Consequently, the series depends upon private support and grants in order to bring high quality programminng to our area. Some highlights of the 2014-2015 season include: Yuna, Angela Brown (Metropolitan Opera star) and Evidence Dance. The season concludes with the appearance Jasmie Guy's one women show called Raisin' Cane: A Harlem Renaissance Odyssey. "The Arts Council is proud to partner with Fayetteville State University in support of their Fine Arts Series," says Deborah Martin Mintz, Arts Council executive director. "Project Support Grants for 2014-15 will help fund 27 projects facilitated by 21 nonprofit organizations in our community. These projects help strengthen our community through festivals and concerts, youth education programs, outdoor public art exhibits, author lectures and so much more." The purpose of Project Support Grants is to increase opportunities for access to arts, cultural and historical programming in Cumberland County. Project Support Grants may be awarded to nonprofit agencies in Cumberland County that demonstrate financial and administrative stability.
