There can't be many groups like the one pictured above! When Keith Harrill and Al Mayse got inducted in the East Rutherford Hall of Fame this year that made for eight members of the 1972 SWC and WNCHSAA championship basketball team that had been chosen for the Cavalier Hall. That is practically an unheard of number for a basketball squad. But if you saw the starting fi ve of Philbeck, Watkins, Simmons, Mayse and Harrill work together under Hall of Fame coach Connie Mack Hamrick and his late Hall of Fame assistant Dan Beason you saw the beauty of fi ve players blending into one unit. Philbeck was the ball handler/passer, Simmons the shooter, Harrill the defender, Mayse the enforcer and Watkins the athlete. Roles interchanged frequently as any of the fi ve could lead the game in scoring, rebounding or assists Coach Hamrick pushed his team to the brink all season. As manager and witness to the fun, his heavy hand might have pushed the Cavaliers past three or four more talented teams on the way to conference and association titles....the end of the line in those days for western teams. By the way how does the manager get in the Hall of Fame? By writing about winning Cavalier teams after college for 30 years. And in a lifetime of watching basketball maybe only the 1977 UNCC played with fi ve players as one as the 72 Cavaliers. After 42 years it was a thrill to re-unite with the Hall of Fame players for a dinner at Fatz. All looked fi t and ready for action but no-one challenged them to a game that evening!
