This is a new transitional home for older youth, located beside the Hands on Missions office and Christine's Home on Hwy 180 North. Sandra's Home will be a division of Laura's Homes of North Carolina and will assist youth who have "aged out" of the foster care system and will help prepare them for independent living. The home will give the children interested in attending college a stable, supportive environment and help them to be able to continue their education, seek employment, get a car and insurance, and gain the skills and tools necessary to lead a productive, successful life. The facility will be named after Sandra Hendrick Ware. Sandra was a beautiful lady with a strong love for people, especially children. She was a loving wife and mother of two boys. Sandra worked in the Children's Department at Double Springs Baptist Church for many years. She had a sweet, gentle and child-like spirit about her and all of the children loved her very much. Sandra's love for the Lord and her compassion and love for people were evident in the way she lived. Sandra died in 2000 from a brain tumor. Ground Breaking For Sandra's Home The Board of Directors for Sandra's Home "dig in" at the ground breaking ceremo- nies. (L to R) Jane Hoke, Ray Hoke, Glenn Walker, Rita Scism, Kathy Davis, Sandra Keeter, Gary Barnett, Don Wright, George Ledford and Bob Smith. –Courtesy: Kathy Davis Photo: M. A. Andrews Members, guests, and honorees gathered for the annual awards ban- quet of the Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland County, on Friday evening at the Parish Hall of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer. It was a special time for special people, those who volunteer and commit themselves to give every boy and girl a better life. The Officers and Board of Directors did an outstanding job in making sure that all were recognized and presented with a plaque denoting their efforts. Whatever volunteers contribute to the program is very important, for it is seen as building blocks for a child's future. The club's new slogan is: "Great Futures Start Here". The awards banquet showcases how important members of the com- munity consider the Boys & Girls Club. They give of themselves unselfishly and what they accomplish is verified by the continued success of the club. Just ask any child in Cleveland County who has experienced their help, guidance and motivation. Boys & Girls Club Of Cleveland County Honors All Those That "Make It Happen" Bill Chambless (left) received this year's Boys & Girls Club "Volunteer Of The Year Award", presented by President Jack Weller. The evening's awards started with the all important "Youth Of The Year Award" . The 2012 award was presented by President, Jack Weller to Shawanda Mosby. Shawanda is graduating from Cleveland Early College High School and is receiving both her High School Diploma and Associates College Degree. She will be attending Western Carolina University and enrolled in a double major. The big surprise of the evening came when the Annual Honor Day Camper Award was changed and named in honor of Ray Hurley, who has been the Director of the Boys & Girls Club for approximately 29 years. The award has been renamed to "The Ray Hurley Honor Day Camper Award". Pictured above receiving the award from Jack Weller is Ray and his wife Ann. Broad River Hosts Easter Egg Hunt With Special Guest Hundreds of kids came out on Sunday, April 1st to join in a big Easter Egg Hunt at the Broad River Greenway. Phifer Cabin also was the place where the Easter Bunny came to make it even more special. The lines were long, but the kids were excited and happy. You can tell by the smiles on their faces that two of those in the crowd were having the best time. Pictured here on the left is four year old, Lily, together with her seven year old brother, Corbett. The big bunny in the middle made their visit to Broad River extra special. –M. A. As it turned out there was more than the expected states participating. A total of 24 states and the District of Columbia were represented in this magnifi cent inaugural competi- tion. Athletes competed in either the sprint or draft-legal races. It all happened on Saturday, March 31. The start time was at 8 a.m. when the Men's Collegiate Sprint began. This was a 500 meter swim, a 22 kilometer bike ride, and a 5 kilometer run. At 8:05 a.m. the Women's Collegiate Sprint got underway with the same guidelines. Because so many members of the general public wanted to be a part of this fi rst-ever event, at 8:15 a.m. the General Public Sprint was thoughtfully in- cluded. At 10 a.m. the Men's Collegiate Team Draft-Legal began. This included a 1 kilo- meter swim, a 30 kilometer bike, and to fi nish, a 6 kilometer run. The same rules applied to the Woman's Collegiate Team-Draft which began at 12:15 p.m. The crowds were very large and the participants not only came to compete, but enjoy the wonders of nature that Rutherford County's Lake Lure offers. Many also took the time to visit Chimney Rock. Rumbling Bald Resort is where the athletes checked in. The overall goal of the exhibition event was to showcase collegiate triathlon as a future NCAA Emerging Sport for Women while creating an opportunity for current collegiate club triathletes, both males and females, to experience Team, Draft-Legal racing with their college peers. Lake Lure and Chimney Rock continue to grow in desirability for outdoor events. It is a constant discovery for all America.
