NOW Serving Cleveland and Rutherford Counties Today's retirees recognize that an active retirement tends to be more rewarding than simply sitting around the house, and that attitude is reflected in the vast number of retirees who volunteer with various nonprofit organizations and other programs across the globe. The fol- lowing are a handful of volunteering opportunities for those retirees who want to give back and make the most of their retirements. Hospice of Rutherford County The following is a list of current volunteer opportunities: Special Events Volunteer, Patient / Family Volunteer, Office Volunteer, Nursing Home Volunteer, Hospice Resale Shop, We Honor Veterans Program, Hospice House Volunteer, Grounds / Maintenance, Faith in Action Representative, Eleventh Hour Volunteer, Pet Therapy, Feet on the Street. Please visit http://hospiceofrutherford.org to download our Volun- teer Opportunities PDF for additional information. To sign up for any volunteer opportunities, please call 828-245-0095. Habitat for Humanity Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that builds and repairs homes for people in need. It has a program titled "Care-A- Vanners" in which volunteers typically spend 2 weeks traveling around the United States and Canada in rented RVs building and restoring homes. Volunteers must pay their own way and bring along their own supplies, such as work shoes, gloves, tool belts, and some tools (power tools are typically provided by the local Habitat for Humanity chapter), and free or low-cost RV parking is provided by Habitat for Humanity. Adventurous retirees who enjoy hitting the open road may find "Care-A-Vanners" matches their love of travel with their desire to give back. Visit http://rutherfordhfh.org or call 828-248-3178 for more volun- teer opportunities. Service vacations Retirement is often seen as a time to travel and see the world, and many retirees have started to combine that love of travel with service opportunities. Globe Aware, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, de- velops short-term volunteer programs in international environments. Each activity aims to promote cultural awareness and promote sus- tainability in needy communities. Volunteers work to address issues identified by the host communities as particularly pressing, interacting with the local residents in ways that are often impossible on more traditional vacations. Work with children Many retirees, especially those without grandchildren or who live far away from their grandkids, find volunteering with kids to be espe- cially rewarding. The opportunities to work with kids are numerous, and retirees can choose a volunteering opportunity where their own life experiences come in handy. Retirees who worked in the medical field might want to volunteer their time at a local children's hospital, where they can assist families as they cope with a child's illness and spend time with the children themselves, whether's it's tutoring sick children, reading them stories or helping them understand their ill- nesses. ~Article provided by Metro Editorial Volunteering Opportunities For Retirees Housing Info • Events & More! There are four main types of exercise, and each type does different things to improve your health and fitness. Doing them all will benefit you and your health. • Endurance, or aerobic, activities increase your breathing and heart rate. Brisk walking or jogging, dancing, swimming and biking are examples. • Strength exercises make your muscles stronger. Lifting weights or using a resistance band can build strength. • Balance exercises help prevent falls. • Flexibility exercises stretch your muscles and can help your body stay limber. Talk to your doctor about the best ways to do each of these types of exercise and about hot to do the exercises safely. In as little as 20 minutes per day, you can be on your way to better endurance, flexibility, strength and balance. -Source: National Institute on Aging For more information on healthy living, timely health news & exclusive savings, visit our website at GoodNeighborPharmacy.com For upcoming events in and around Rutherford County @Rutherfordwkly on FOLLOW Ads Work!
